Leo Helentjaris, 89, of Celina, died at 1:20 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys, of natural causes.
He was born on Oct. 13, 1923, in Dayton, to parents Thomas Helentjaris and Lillian Bailey, both of whom preceded him in death.
On Aug. 30, 1947, he married Henrietta White, who preceded him in death on April 25, 1912.
Joan A. Eilerman, 78, of Fort Loramie, died at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Dorothy Love Retirement Community.
She was born on May 8, 1934, in Maria Stein to the late Edward J. and Olivia (Brunswick) Bergman.
She married Donald P. Eilerman on Oct. 6, 1954, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1994.
Glen S. “Grinny” Fox, 89, of Celina, died at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Van Wert County Hospital of natural causes.
He was born on Sept. 14, 1923, in Mendon, to parents Pete Fox and Hazel Stewart, both of whom preceded him in death.
He married his first wife, Dorothy Fox, on Feb. 8, 1945, and she preceded him in death in Nov. 1985.
On Sept. 6, 1993, he married Kathy Clay Fast Fox, who survives.
ST. MARYS — Angela Hamberg, with New Bremen Economic Development, discussed a shortage of skilled labor in the region at St. Marys Community Library’s Businessperson Breakfast Thursday morning.
The goal of economic development, she said, is to attract, retain and expand the number of people and businesses in the area.
In a village like New Bremen, manufacturing jobs are unfilled for two reasons — first because of a drug problem, but second, and more importantly, because of a lack of workers with the skills to fill the positions.
MINSTER — A group of eight students describes what they agree is the best moment of the season in band.
It’s Homecoming night. The lights go out, they explain, and the crowd, more than the usual number thanks to alumni, starts screaming. The band takes the field in the dark with their instrument and glow sticks, and spells the word “cat” for Wildcat.
ST. MARYS — After missing a chance to score in the first inning, the New Bremen Lady Cardinals softball team didn’t let any other opportunities get by them as they beat the St. Marys Roughriders 12-1 Thursday at K. C. Geiger Park.
ST. HENRY — The St. Marys baseball team had one chance to get to St. Henry’s strong pitching staff in the top of the first inning. After that, the Redskin staff teamed up to shut down the Roughrider bats.
St. Henry had three pitchers combine on a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over St. Marys on Thursday night at the Wally Post Athletic Complex.
St. Marys loaded the bases with no one out in the first inning, but Ryan Mikesell got out of the jam unscathed. He pitched four scoreless innings before turning it over to the bullpen.

ST. MARYS — Parkway put its full arsenal on display that has the Panthers hoping to be in the thick of the Midwest Athletic Conference title chase again in 2013.
Parkway got four hits and four runs batted in from Kylie Snyder while pitcher Sierra Fent tossed four no-hit innings with eight strikeouts in an 11-0 win over St. Marys at K.C. Geiger Park on Tuesday.
Snyder singled four times in five innings for Parkway. Rachel King doubled and Taylor Walls had a triple. Zoey Pond was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Kayla Walls scored three runs.
ST. MARYS — The St. Marys baseball team couldn’t take advantage of its two-out bases-loaded situation early in the game. Lima Central Catholic turned that exact scenario a half inning later into what turned out to be the game-deciding rally.
The complexion of the St. Marys-Lima Central Catholic game on Tuesday — a game LCC won 8-4 — changed drastically over the short span of an inning.
