NEW BREMEN — Colleen Zunk, who works with autistic young people, says the difference between average preschool age children and autism spectrum students is a lack of social and communication skills.
“Generally a child who has autism spectrum disorder...(is) disconnected from other people and unable to interact with people and objects,” she said. “Instead of playing with a toy the way they normally would, the child uses the object in a way that stimulates the senses.”
Cletus F. Wenning, 84, of Ohio 716, Osgood died at 9:15 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2013 at his home.
He was born on Dec. 9, 1928 in Yorkshire, to the late Anton and Sophia (Hoelscher) Wenning.
On May 14, 1955, he married Lois Schlarman in St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Osgood. She survives in Osgood.
Robert F. Butterman, 88, of New Bremen, formerly of Lakeview and Marion, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Elwood Nursing Center in New Bremen.
He was born March 1, 1925, in Marion to the late Ora E. and Clara I. (Fleming) Butterman.
In 1962, he married Violet M. (Bland) Butterman she preceded him in death in 1987, he then married Elizabeth A. (McClaskey) in 1990, she preceded him in death in 2001.
ST. MARYS — St. Marys’ sputtering offense broke out in a big way against its biggest rival.
St. Marys exploded for a seven-run fourth inning and earned its first win of the season over Celina 10-5 at K.C. Geiger Park on Thursday.
ST. MARYS — For St. Marys resident Courtney Roby, 17, this week was a little bit of sunshine in what has proven to be an impossibly difficult year.
In July 2012, doctors discovered Roby had a brain tumor. She had been having headaches five or six months earlier, her mother, Chasity Buchanan, said. She took Courtney to the chiropractor, who didn’t find anything serious. When they persisted, Buchanan scheduled Roby for a consultation at Dayton Children’s Medical Center. Roby never left the hospital that day.
Clifford "Howdy" Garwick, 79, of Mendon, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013, at the Laurels of Shane Hill, Rockford.
He was born on Sept. 3, 1933, in Van Wert, to parents Clifford E. Garwick and Maxine (Clover) Garwick Putman and stepfather Robert E.L. Putman, all of whom preceded him in death.
He married Dorothy E. (Bair) in 1952, and she survives, along with their daughter, Sherry Davis (and Dan Gabriel) of Celina.
Their son, Scott R. Garwick, passed away in August 2012.
Larry L. Leffel, 70, of New Knoxville, died at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on Oct. 25, 1942, the son of Walter and Violet (Truesdale) Leffel.
He married Sharon Henkener on Aug. 26, 1960, and she survives at the residence.
He is also survived by his three children, Craig (Esther) Leffel of New Knoxville, Keith (Susan) Leffel of New Knoxville and Amy (Gregg) Weadock of New Knoxville; by his grandchildren, Zachary Leffel, Lucas Leffel, Rachel Leffel, Logan Leffel, Morgan Leffel, Alicia Weadock and Erica Weadock.
