NEW KNOXVILLE — The record for an extrication using jaws of life is around one minute 30 seconds at the annual firemen’s picnic and extrication contest in New Knoxville, but firefighters will be pushing their limits on Saturday so that they will be prepared in the event of an accident.
The competition, at 5 p.m., will be preceded by an opening ceremony at 3 p.m. with food and beverages, and the sale of 600 chicken dinners starting at 4 p.m. in New Knoxville Community Park. A reverse raffle will begin at 6 p.m., while at 8 p.m. the band The Leftoverz will play.
Norman R. Thiebeau, 73, of 14198 Glynwood-New Knoxville Road in St. Marys died at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 at St. Marys Living Center.
He was born on Nov. 13, 1939 in Versailles to Robert and Druscilla (Berger) Thiebeau.
On Nov. 27, 1959, in Tazwell, Tenn., he married Dorothy Rhodes, who died July 28, 2008.
He is survived by a son Richard (Mindy) Thieubeau of St. Marys, and three grandchildren, Shannon, Casey and Spencer Thiebeau, as well as two sisters, Connie Highley of Del Rio, Texas; and Darlene Kruse of Vandalia.
Vonnie G. (Finke) Martin, 70, of 1201 W. High St., was called home while surrounded by loved ones in the home of her daughter at 11:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2013.
It was the end of a rapid and progressive battle of cancer but a new beginning of pain-free eternal happiness and where she shall wait for her loved ones.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1963
Fifty years ago this week in 1963, the St. Marys Roughriders hosted the Coldwater Cavaliers at Memorial Stadium and rebounded from their loss the previous week by thumping the Cavs 26-8 in front of a crowd of nearly 3,000 in the stands.
The Roughriders jumped in front early as Ronnie Jones hit pay dirt with a six-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
ST. MARYS — The St. Marys City Schools District Board of Education approved a resolution of commendation for students Kristen Dammeyer and TJ Wirth as Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program during their meeting Wednesday night.
The students placed in the top 5 percent of all students who took the SAT test in October 2012. They were two of 34,000 students to receive this commended status.
NEW KNOXVILLE — Rita Thalen, a retired naturalist, taught and performed at the United Methodist Church in New Knoxville Tuesday night in a presentation on how the Civil War affected women.
Fred Stanley Holec, 73, died on Oct. 6, 2013, at Coastal Carolina Hospital after several months recovering from esophageal cancer.
He was born in Elyria, on April 22, 1940, to the late Fred Joseph Holec and Rose Frances Holec.
Mr. Holec graduated from Elyria High School in 1958.
He received a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy in Ada in 1962.
Evelyn R. Burger, 87, of 808 Hackney St. in St. Marys, died 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at her residence.
She was born on Aug. 5, 1926, in Celina, to Harold and Margaret (Lehman) Bender.
On Dec. 20, 1947, in Celina, she married Leo “Jack” Burger, who died on Oct. 25, 1985.
