10 Years Ago This Week – 2003

This week in 2003, the St. Marys Roughriders squared off with the Cincinnati Wyoming Cowboys in football playoff action and unfortunately for Roughrider fans, were sent home with a 18-16 defeat.  

Wyoming got the scoring underway early in the first period to jump ahead 6-0, but Bo Frye answered with touchdown runs of 3 and 33 yards in the second quarter to push the Blue and Gold in charge, 14-6.

Nov. 2: The Kiwanis Club's pancake day will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the American Legion in St. Marys.

The first-ever Japanese Sister City garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the Friendship Center.

Cisco Lawn and Landscaping, Flowers and Gifts will hold an open house from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

The Lake Improvement Association will meet at 10 a.m. today at the Celina Moose Lodge.

Trick-or-treat in St. Marys will be held from noon to 2 p.m. today.

Nov. 1: The first-ever Japanese Sister City garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Friendship Center.

Friday Craft Circle will be held from 10 a.m. to noon today at the St. Marys Community Public Library.

A Preschool Storytime will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the New Knoxville Library. Kids ages 3, 4 and 5 (not yet in Kindergarten) are welcome.

St. Marys boys soccer a win from state

FINDLAY — The St. Marys boys soccer team is riding its defense along a path of 1-0 wins to the doorstep of the state tournament.

Jared Rose knocked in the game-winning goal in scrum in front of the goal in the closing minutes of the second overtime, avoiding the ordeal of penalty kicks and extending the Roughriders’ season into November for the first time in the program’s history with a 1-0 win over the Maumee Panthers at Graham Memorial Stadium in Findlay on Wednesday.

Wind Advisory Issued

October 31, 2013

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory effective from 4 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday. Winds will come out of the south and range from 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 50 mph. A wind advisory is issued when winds are expected to be sustained at 31 to 39 mph or gusts range between 46 and 57 mph.

Threat Found In New Bremen

NEW BREMEN — School officials in New Bremen discovered a written threat at the high school on Wednesday, prompting a search of the building.
In a One Call, Superintendent Howard Overman said as a result of the threat and as a precautionary measure, students may have their bags searched before entering the school today. The building was searched and secured by local law enforcement officials and members of the Allen County Sheriff's Office. School will go on as scheduled today.

Update: Trick-or-Treats Rescheduled

ST. MARYS — Trick-or-treat in St. Marys has been rescheduled for noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. Trick-or-treat in New Knoxville and New Bremen has been rescheduled for noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Glenna Mae Meckstroth, 83

October 30, 2013

Glenna Mae Meckstroth, 83, of rural New Knoxville, died peacefully at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013,  at her residence.  

She was born on April 22, 1930, to (Omen) Bernard and Lena (Briggs) Davenport.

Her mother died when she was 7 months old and her dad and brother moved in with her father’s parents, Frank and Nora Davenport.

On June 24, 1950, she married William A. Meckstroth, who preceded her in death.

S. Margaret Koons, 92

October 30, 2013

S. Margaret Koons, 92, formerly of 730  Hillcrest Drive, St. Marys, and a resident of Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community, died at 1:15 p.m.  Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at Otterbein St. Marys.

She was born on June 3, 1921, the daughter of Joe and Agnes (Lawler) Gearing. She married George Koons on Aug. 10, 1946, and he survives at Otterbein St. Marys.

She is also survived by her four children, Michael (Mary Jo) Koons of Vandalia, William (Nancy) Koons of Chagrin Falls, Jeanetta (Mark) Muhlenkamp of Englewood, and Barb (Ken) Niekamp of Centerville.

Rotary Parade Set For Today

ST. MARYS — The Rotary Club’s annual Halloween parade and costume contest will be held today. Judging for the costume contest starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Chestnut Street parking lot. The parade starts at 6 p.m. and is only open to children.
