Joshua James Eilerman, 21

January 25, 2013

Joshua James Eilerman, 21, of Fort Loramied died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Sept. 26, 1991, in St. Marys, to Jill (Clune) and Kevin Eilerman, who survive in Fort Loramie.

He had two siblings, five grandparents and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael Church in Fort Loramie with the Rev. Steven Shoup presiding. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Fort Loramie.

Mary Louise Von Aschen, 100

Mary Louise Von Aschen, 100, of Piqua, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at the Piqua Manor Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 2, 1912, in Piqua to the late Forrest and Gertrude (Neighamer) Kerns.

Survivors include a granddaughter Carolyn (Dan) Garrison  of St. Marys, and several great-grandchildren.

She worked at the former Atlas Underwear Company, Stanton’s Bakery and as a private housekeeper until she decided to retire on Dec. 8, 2003.

Martin pleads innocent to murder charge

CELINA — The defendant in the murder of a Rockford woman pleaded innocent to the charge Friday morning.

Flanked by his attorneys, Daniel Charles Martin, 40, pleaded innocent to one count of murder, with a gun specification, during an arraignment hearing in Mercer County Common Pleas Court. Martin, who is being held without bond, faces the murder charge in connection with the death of Melinda Shinn.

Rider Relishes Time on the Field

ST. MARYS — Senior Roughrider Luke Leffel, 17, is all about sports, the outdoors and meeting people.

These passions are reflected in the many activities and organizations in which he participates, both within the walls of Memorial High School and outside it.

Leffel is a member of the school Sportsmanship Committee. During his freshman year, one of Leffel’s peers recommended him for the committee and he went along with it.

Students Take Pledge

ST. MARYS — The first 200 students of a revised DARE decision-making curriculum in St. Marys graduated in the middle school auditorium Friday morning.

Deputy Sam Blank, in his fifth year of teaching the program, said the new decision-making curriculum left him skeptical initially.

“But then it just clicked. It made sense,” he said.

WRESTLING: St. Marys goes 8-1 in WBL dual matches

OTTAWA —  The St. Marys wrestling team finished off an 8-1 run through the Western Buckeye League dual matches with a pair of wins against Ottawa-Glandorf and Van Wert on Thursday night at Robert J. Hermiller Gymnasium in Ottawa.

The Roughriders drubbed Ottawa-Glandorf 77-3 in the opening match and then beat Van Wert, 50-22, in their WBL dual match finale.

“We wrestled pretty well most of the time,” St. Marys head coach Larry Gruber said.

GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUND-UP: Riders win at Defiance; Minster, New Knoxville earn MAC wins

DEFIANCE — A trio of Roughriders reached double-figures and the St. Marys girls basketball team’s long trek north to Defiance was rewarded with a 51-41 win on Thursday night.

Kelsey Rohrbach led St. Marys with 13 points, Molly Albert added 12 points and Kelly Heitkamp scored 11 points for the Roughriders.

The Roughriders improved to 3-12 and 2-4 in the Western Buckeye League. The win also snapped an eight-game losing streak and gave the Riders’ their first win since Dec. 13 against Kenton.

ST. MARYS — A countywide organization recognized a slew of volunteers who helped make a difference in the lives of their neighbors.

The United Way of Auglaize County held a Celebration and Appreciation Luncheon Thursday afternoon at the St. Marys Eagles. The event was a celebration of the accomplishments of the past year, an opportunity to recognize the hard work of its volunteers and present awards and to announce the results of its 2012 campaign.

Perry William Shepherd Jr., 64

Perry William Shepherd Jr., 64, of 661 Grove Lane in St. Marys, died at 12:46 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

He was born on July 28, 1948, in Piqua, to Perry W. and Delora (Creager) Shepherd.

Survivors include three sisters; his stepmother, Patricia Shepherd  of St. Marys; a cousin.

He was preceded in death by his father, Parry W. Shepherd Sr.; a sister; by his paternal grandparents.

He was a graduate of Piqua High School.
