ST. MARYS — Members of two local chambers of commerce got the opportunity to pepper an Ohio Congressman with questions ranging from the current fiscal crisis in Washington, D.C., to immigration reform.

James Carpenter, 70, of St. Marys, died on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at his residence.  Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Home 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West Chapel) in St. Marys.

Marvin Kishler, 91

February 1, 2013

Marvin Kishler, 91, of St. Marys, died on Thursday Jan. 31, 2013, at St. Marys Living Center.
 Arrangements are being completed with Miller – Long and Folk Funeral Home 314 W. High St. in St. Marys.

Portman Backs HOF Coin

ST. MARYS — An Ohio senators hopes to get approval for a coin honoring one of the state’s largest tourist attractions.

Sen. Rob Portman announced plans to introduce legislation that would authorize the U.S. mint to produce commemorative coins marking the 50th anniversary of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. The coins would not cost the taxpayers any money.

Band Cranks Up Tunes

MINSTER — Residents at Heritage Manor in Minster were treated to a live concert Wednesday night.

The Rev. Jim “Jimmy-Do” Slone makes his living cleaning, lives clean and leads a band that only plays clean venues, Slone said Wednesday night after Third Generation played for residents of Heritage Manor Nursing Center.

“We like good clean fun,” Slone said. “We don’t drink or cut up. At least, not anymore.”

Lois A. Slorp, 76

Lois A. Slorp, 76, of Celina, died peacefully in her sleep at the Celina Manor on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013. She will be missed by her loving family and friends.

She was born on April 25, 1936, in Covington, Ky., to parents Fred and Florence (Hughes) Chambers, both of whom preceded her in death.

On Feb. 14, 1954, she married Kenneth Slorp, who survives.

She is also survived by three daughters, Sue (Denney) Gehle of Celina, Brenda (Bill) Jenkins of Huntsville and Nancy Patten (Greg Thompson) of Celina; by three grandchildren; by six great-grandchildren.

Michelle R. Geib, 49

Michelle R. Geib, 49, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:40 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at her residence, surrounded by her family.

She was born on Aug. 27, 1963, in Cleveland, to Charles and JoAnn (Becker) Rowe.  Her father survives in Wapakoneta and her mother survives in Cleveland.

On July 3, 1997, she married Robert Geib and he survives in Wapakoneta.

Walter Seigle Horner Jr., 68

Walter Seigle Horner Jr., 68, of St. Marys, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital in Akron, after an extended illness.

He was born on Aug. 1, 1944, in Ravenna, to Walter (Jack) and Eloise (nee Marks) Horner, who preceded him in death. Mrs. Horner, through her mother, was a direct descendant of Stephen Meyers Jr., the first settler of Streetsboro Township in 1822.

Foxhoven Named Interim SSD

ST. MARYS — The city of St. Marys will have a familiar face serving as its interim safety-service director.

St. Marys Mayor Pat McGowan told The Evening Leader Eric Ostling is no longer the safety-service director for the city, effective immediately. St. Marys Police Chief Greg Foxhoven will serve as interim safety-service director. Ostling was hired in October to succeed Jason Little, who was hired in March but announced his resignation in August.

Local Reaches Workout Milestone

ST. MARYS — St. Marys resident Barb Lutz surpassed the 2,000 workout mark at the local Curves, where she has been going for the past 11 years.

“I started out of curiosity to begin with,” Lutz said. “I had a free pass to try it out for two weeks, and I asked my best friend and she and I came out, and we never quit.”

Lutz and her friend work out at Curves at 6:30 a.m. every weekday. The Curves program is not like a typical gym, where there are weight machines and members are on their own to pick and choose what to do.
