Nina Louise Phillips Guigou, 90

Nina Louise Phillips Guigou, 90, of Valdese, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Joint Township Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.

Louise was born to the late Everett Leon and Edna Greene Phillips on Jan. 15, 1923, in Bakersville, N.C. She graduated from Spruce Pine High School in 1939, and at 16 years old began her studies at Mars Hill College.

Rider Shines Positive Light

ST. MARYS — 18-year-old senior Brooke Hertenstein exudes happiness and positivity and her cheerful outlook, passion and enthusiasm shine through in every project and endeavor she tackles.

Music and the arts are a big part of Hertenstein’s life, but within Memorial High School, she is involved in much more. Hertenstein is a member of National Honor Society, Relay For Life, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, band and choir.

Dancers Prep for Competition

ST. MARYS — The girls at Kristina’s Dance Escape in St. Marys are gearing up for competition season with rehearsals of ballet, jazz, tap and hip hop numbers that they’ll perform all over Ohio and Indiana this spring.

Kristina Blockberger, who has taught dance in St. Marys for 14 years, said the girls audition for spots in the summer on the more serious team.

“I danced all my life and did it competitively,” Blockberger said.

Bill Would Offer Free Permits

ST. MARYS — A recently proposed bill in the Ohio House could give some senior citizens free hunting and fishing licenses.

Ohio Rep. Nick Barborak, of the 5th House District, introduced House Bill 25 — a measure that seeks to provide free fishing and hunting licenses along with fur taker, deer and wild turkey permits and wetlands habitat stamps to Ohioans 65 and older. Barborak, a Democrat from Lisbon, said the idea has been floating around Columbus for years.

Rebecca “Becky” L. Braun, 63

Rebecca “Becky” L. Braun, 63, of 4302 Merrill Ave. in Celina, passed away at 2:01 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

She was born on July 10, 1949, in Celina, to the late Alvin and Dorothy (Wenning) Uhlenhake.

On Jan. 9, 1971, she married Michael L. Braun of Celina.

Helen C. Ralston, 98

February 15, 2013

Helen C. Ralston, 98, of 402 S. Vine St. in St. Marys, died at 3:10 p.m.  Sunday, Feb.10, 2013, at St. Marys Living Center.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1914, in Indianapolis, Ind. to William and Anna Yurkas.

On Nov. 15, 1933, she married Othal Marion Thompson, and he preceded her in death in November 1963.

Survivors include daughter Bonita (Duane) Thompson  of Mount View, Md.; son Jerry (Jacqueline) Thompson  of St. Marys; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

New Knoxville earns piece of MAC championship with 2nd half rally past Cavs

COLDWATER — The New Knoxville girls basketball team didn’t wait its turn to get a share of a Midwest Athletic Conference title.

Even with a roster without a single senior that’s likely to make the Rangers the conference favorite for 2013-2014, when the opportunity to earn the MAC championship presented itself  this winter No. 11-ranked New Knoxville seized the moment.

Thursday Girls Hoops Round-Up: Cougars down Roughriders, Cardinals rally past DSJ

VAN WERT — Van Wert outscored the St. Marys girls basketball team 18-2 in the third quarter and went on to capture a 45-27 victory over the Roughriders on Thursday night .

LeeAnn Bertke led the Roughriders in scoring for the second straight game with 12 points.

St. Marys finished the regular season with a 3-19 record and a 2-7 mark in Western Buckeye League play. The Roughriders have lost six straight games.

Love Keeps Couple Together

ST. MARYS — Billy Felver may only have the top quarter of his heart left working properly, but he’s given the whole thing to Paula Green.

In front of a crowd of friends at the Auglaize County Council on Aging last Sunday, Felver proposed to Green impromptu, without hesitation, after she gave him a ring and dared him to do it.

“Her face turned real red,” Felver said. “She’s a real sweet, nice kid, lovable. We hit it off right off the bat.”
