Louise “Lil” Wagner, 92

Louise “Lil” Wagner, 92, formerly of North Garfield Street, Minster, passed away at 10:35 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Elmwood in New Bremen, where she had been a resident for two and a half years.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1920, in St. Patrick to Louis and Anna (Hoying) Raterman. On Aug. 4, 1942, she married Wallace B. Wagner Sr. He died on Feb. 10, 1995.

ST. MARYS —  Today is Rare Disease Day and this year, one local family is committed to ending the isolation that comes with having a rare disease by speaking out about their experiences and the ways technology has changed how those with rare diseases interact with the community.

When Cheryl Harr saw her son Jared — a student at St. Marys Intermediate School — on his bed moaning and unable to move last December, it wasn’t fear of the unknown that gripped her.

BOYS HOOPS: New Knoxville buries 10 3-pointers in win over Minster

COLDWATER — Minster faced a worst-case scenario when it comes to playing New Knoxville: almost all of the Rangers’ half-dozen perimeter threats were knocking down shots.

For the Wildcats  (12-11) it meant a long night of scrambling around, playing a virtual game of defensive wack-a-mole while New Knoxville spread the floor and whipped the ball around to find wide-open looks from beyond the arc.

BOYS HOOPS: St. Marys ends five-year tourney hex with win over Kenton

LIMA — The last time the St. Marys boys basketball team had won a sectional tournament game before Tuesday night, the players on the current Roughrider roster were in junior high and elementary school.

St. Marys put an end to that postseason drought, winning the program's first tournament game in five years with a 60-50 victory over Kenton in a Division II sectional semifinal at Lima Senior High School on Tuesday night.

WAPAKONETA — A nearly 3 1/2-hour standoff at the Western Suite Inn in Wapakoneta ended peacefully at approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday when two men wanted on warrants out of Logan County surrendered to local law enforcement.

Officers with the Wapakoneta Police Department and members of the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) and Hostage Negotiation Team managed to talk the two men — one wanted on a charge of burglary and the second on a charge of domestic violence — to surrender without incident.

Shirley Ann (Schwieterman) Mertz, 78

Shirley Ann (Schwieterman) Mertz, 78, passed away at 10:50 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1934, to the late Charles and Hilda (Marx) Schwieterman.

She married William A. Mertz on June 23, 1954. They had nine children.

She was preceded in death by a son, William B. Mertz.

Leonard E. “Leo” Hauser, 66

Leonard E. “Leo” Hauser, 66, of Wapakoneta died at 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, Westerville after battling cancer.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1946, in Los Angeles, to Byron A. and Merle V. (Kelly) Hauser who preceded him in death.

He is survived by two daughters and a son, Ellen (Michael) Engle of Wapakoneta, Elaine (Amy) Hauser and Byron A. Hauser, both of Columbus; three grandchildren; two brothers.

Owen Michael Moran

Owen Michael Moran, of Wapakoneta, died on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, shortly after birth at the Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine.  

He was the son of Jacob and Nichole (Phillips) Moran of Wapakoneta.

Fire Kills 1 In Celina

CELINA — The state fire marshal’s office is investigating a fatal fire that claimed the life of a Celina resident Tuesday night.

At 7:52 p.m., the Celina Fire Department received a phone call from Mercer County Central Dispatch reporting a trailer fire at 3696 Bunker Hill Road, Celina. The initial report from a neighbor indicated a resident may have been inside the trailer at the time of the blaze. No other details were released regarding the cause of the fire.

NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville Board of Education members look forward to a presentation from Superintendent Kim Waterman and Treasurer Cathy Doseck in a future meeting to get a better idea of the district’s fiscal situation and when bonds will expire as they look at where the school will spend in the future.
