ST. MARYS — A weather system that dumped more than 7 inches of snow on the region snarled morning traffic, closed local schools and forced residents to dig out of what could be the season’s last storm.
Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson said he measured between 7 and 8 inches of snow throughout Auglaize County. Drifts, he noted, are topping 3 feet.
Ruth Littlefield, 102, formerly of St. Marys, died on Monday, March 4, 2013, in Chicago, Ill. Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.
c, of 106 W. High St. in Mendon, died at 9:12 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born on March 25, 1943, in Omaha, Neb., to Kenneth and Wauneta (Woods) Stanek.
Survivors include four daughters, Tammy (David) Brott of Omaha, Neb., Tracey Stanek of Omaha, Neb., Kelly Bettcher of Omaha, Neb., Michelle Petzold of Eugene, Ore.; a son, David Scroggins of Decatur, Ill.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister.
Jesse Duane "JD" Springer, 49, of Celina, died on Monday, March 4, 2013, at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1963, in Polk County, Fla., to Norman Duane and Jessie Kendall Springer.
He married Lisa Browder on April 15, 2006, and she survives.
He is also survived by a son and daughter, Justin and Jennifer Springer, both of Coldwater; a stepdaughter, Amber (Ryan) Holycross of DeGraff; a brother; two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Rick “Tiny” Boyd, 47, of Spencerville, died on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on Oct. 9, 1965, in St. Marys.
He was the son of William Sr. and Jeanne (Lehman) Boyd.
On June 11, 2011, he married Melissa (Smith-Walker) Boyd, who survives in Spencerville.
ST. MARYS — A winter storm is barreling down on the region, bringing the chance for close to a foot of snow to Auglaize County.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the county, effective through Wednesday morning. Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson said nailing down a definitive snowfall prediction is difficult because there are two fronts coming together, with Auglaize County in the middle.
BOTKINS — A northwest Ohio man died this morning after the vehicle he was driving slid across the median and into the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 south of Botkins and collided with a semitrailer.
Bret Woods, 46, of Toledo, died from injuries suffered from the collision at 3:15 a.m. today, according to a trooper’s report from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP). His wife, Bernadette Woods, was transported by Anna EMS to Lima Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Betty J. Sondergelt, 91, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013.
She was born on Oct. 19, 1921, in St. Marys, the daughter of Albert and Louise (Hoewischer) Hudson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 47 years, Robert L. Sondergelt; a sister; and four brothers.
Survivors include her three daughters, Sue Sondergelt of Cape Haze, Fla., Diane Sondergelt of Worthington, and Cindy (Tom) Bloch of Georgetown, Ky.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
CELINA — A pilot aeration study has been approved for Grand Lake St. Marys to use solar powered aeration equipment in two locations, with the goal of potentially lowering Celina’s water toxicity before water treatment and opening Second Beach at St. Marys.
Grand Lake St. Marys Restoration Commission Manager Milt Miller made the announcement during Saturday’s Lake Improvement Association meeting. Miller has long touted the need for increased aeration in the lake as a way to improve its water quality.
LIMA — The St. Marys boys basketball team went basket for basket with Bath for a quarter, but the Wildcats’ relentless defensive pressure and array of offensive weapons proved to be too much.
Bath pulled away from St. Marys behind junior Taren Sullivan’s 25-point night for a 76-52 sectional final victory on Friday night at Lima Senior to end the Roughriders’ season.
