Laurie R. Shaner, 86, of Celina, died on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at the Gardens of Celina, of natural causes.
She was born on May 14, 1927, in New Bremen, to parents Alvin and Laura (Bertke) Dicke.
On Feb. 16, 1952, she married Vilas Leon Shaner, who survives.
Kenneth J. Wenning, 71, of McCartyville, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Minster.
He was born on Aug. 21, 1942, in Chickasaw, to the late Joseph and the late Josephine (Depweg Moeller) Wenning.
He married Marciel L. "Marcy" Schmackers on Sept. 14, 1963, in St. Henry. She preceded him in death on Oct. 14, 2002.
He then married Barbara Feltz Boeckman on Aug. 8, 2006. She survives in McCartyville.
Dorothy S. Dammeyer, 94, of New Bremen, died at 7:08 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at the Otterbein Retirement Community of St. Marys. She was born on March 24, 1919, in New Bremen. She was the daughter of Henry and Edna (Greiwe) Block.
On Jan. 26, 1946, she married Richard Dammeyer who died on March 14, 2003. Survivors include her children, Duane (Marty) Dammeyer of Ojai, Calif.; Daryl (Wanda) Dammeyer of New Bremen; Daran (Jennifer) Dammeyer of Palm Desert, Calif.; grandsons Dustin and Derek Dammeyer; and great-grandson Dakota Dammeyer.
Division III, Region 10
If the season ended today, Celina and Wapakoneta would both be in the playoffs in Division III's Region 10. Celina is in fourth place in the region with a 4-0 record and 7.7 point average. Wapakoneta is in the sixth position with its 3-1 record and a 6.0 point average. The top eight teams make the playoffs.
ST. MARYS — Matt Dine made sure St. Marys wouldn’t be scoreless this time out. He kept adding on until it was almost a record-setting night.
Dine scored St. Marys’ first four goals in the Roughriders 7-0 win over Defiance on Tuesday.
Dine’s four goals were one shy of the school record set by Tyler Hirschfeld, who had five goals in a 2000 game. Those goals were Hirschfeld’s only five goals of his varsity career.

With aggressive and hard play the New Bremen Cardinals bounced back against New Knoxville to defeat the Shawnee Indians 25-17, 26-14 and 25-12 on Tuesday.
“We emphasized in practice yesterday that we have to stay aggressive and stay after the ball no matter who we play,” Cardinals head coach Theresa Jenkins said. “After Thursday’s game against New Knoxville we decided that we needed to refocus and we started to get back after the ball.”
MINSTER — The consequences of negative behaviors is darkness, a motivational speaker told a group of Minster students on Tuesday.
Eric Lorenz, from Three Screens USA out of Chicago, gave a talk to high school students and encouraged them to promote a positive school culture. After repeated negative choices, “life starts to get dark, starts to move into darkness,” he said.
David Lyle Burnett, 72, of Spencerville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at his daughter Amber (Patrick) Wise’s residence in Tolleson, Ariz.. His death was the result of a rapid and progressive battle with cancer.
Born on Aug. 6, 1941, in Van Wert County, he was the son of Elmer “Butch” and Alice (Hirn) Burnett, both of whom preceded him in death. He also goes home with our Lord to be reunited with sisters, Shirley Ann Ruff and Lynda Carol Sudman.
