50 Years Ago This Week – 1963
ST. MARYS — Organizers of the Auglaize County Council on Aging’s second-ever Harvestfest say the event will be bigger and better than ever before.
The event, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Miller Building of the Auglaize County Fairgrounds, will feature homemade ice cream, an ODOT driving simulator, appraisals, historical stories and more.
“We have all kinds of things for kids to do,” Outreach Coordinator Trena Chiles said.
NEW BREMEN — Born and raised in New Bremen, Lindsay Burkard is back home and working as a eighth-grade language arts teacher after going to college in Toccoa Falls, Ga.
“I’m really excited to be near my family in New Bremen,” Burkard said. “The schools here are really great ... I wasn’t anticipating getting hired at New Bremen, so I’m excited about that.”
Joan J. Ruterbories, 80, of Celina, died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima.
She was born on Aug. 21, 1933, in Nilegh, Neb. to Harold and Melissa (Bare) Johnson.
On Dec. 26, 1963, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk, Neb., she married Joseph Duane Ruterbories, who died in April 1995.
James V. “Jim” Beatty, 69, of Kettlersville, died suddenly on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, in Fort Loramie, while camping with his family.
He was born on Nov. 9, 1943, in Dayton, to Tilford and Mary Craycraft Beatty. Both parents preceded him in death.
On June 4, 1997, he married Jane Sager who survives in Kettlersville.

The St. Marys Roughriders volleyball team finished second at their namesake invitational while earning their first two victories of the season before falling to Pandora-Gilboa 25-19, 22-25 and 25-23 in the championship match on Saturday.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Riders head coach Monica VanderHorst said. “In the first set we got off to a slow start, but we played them tough. In the second set we played with enthusiasm and when you have the serve-receive at 90 percent that’s pretty effective.”
WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys girls cross country team earned the Wapakoneta Night Meet title on Saturday evening. The Roughriders won their first invitational of the season under the lights with seven runners finishing in the top 20 of the girls finishers.

Arrangements are being completed with the Miller–Long and Folk Funeral Home (High Street Chapel) in St. Marys, where services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
