Family Rescues Kitten

ST. MARYS — Thursday night was an emotional one for New Bremen resident Monica Lemley and her family when her daughters came home with a 12-week-old kitten they found at Speedway Lanes.

The kitten’s right eye was injured so badly all that is visible is red.

“The kids brought him home and asked if we could fix him,” Lemley said.

Cory D. Michael, 27

Cory D. Michael, 27, of 148 N. Lincoln St. Minster, died on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at his residence following a 14-month illness.
He was born on Aug. 10, 1986, in Troy, to Michele Michael of Minster and Douglas and a stepmother Blanca Michael of St. Marys.
He married Angela J. Brown on Oct. 30, 2010, in St. Augustine Church, Minster. She survives in Minster.

St. Marys hosts Shawnee squad that now has Owen at the helm

The St. Marys football team opens the home and Western Buckeye League portion of its 2013 schedule against a Shawnee team that was tested by a defending state champion in Week 1.

New Shawnee head coach Steve Owen made his debut in a 42-7 loss to Marion Local as pilot of the Indians program after being the team’s offensive line coach under Dick West, who retired after the 2012 season.

Owens said much of the principles his team uses on both the offensive and defnesive sides of the ball are the same as Shawnee under West, but tweaked to make use of space.

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls tennis team had its hands full with an experienced Celina team on Thursday, but St. Marys head coach Brice Brenneman said his team was able to measure its progress.

“I really was pleased with the way we played,” Brenneman said after Celina won 5-0. “It would’ve been nice to pull a set out somewhere, but we had matched up with them at every position at least once when playing in invitationals and every position was quite a bit better than it was before.”

Teacher Excited To Join Minster

MINSTER — Sarah Ambos, of Anna, joins Minster school staff as a kindergarten teacher this year after teaching all day kindergarten for two years in Greenville.

“Minster has a great reputation,” Ambos said. “I knew a lot about the school. I knew they had hardworking teachers. It’s also closer to home.”

The Wright State University graduate has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and a master’s degree to teach reading, something she said she cares deeply about.

Beatrice B. Pifer, 95

Beatrice B. Pifer, 95, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at the Laurels of Shane Hill.  

She was born on April 13, 1918, in  Rockford, to LeRoy and Bertha Leininger Pifer.

Beatrice is survived by four sisters; five nieces and nephews; 20 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.  

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford, the Rev. Tom Brunstrup, officiating.  

Robert “Bob” H. Brandt, 71

Robert “Bob” H. Brandt, 71, of Montpelier passed away on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, following a brief illness.  He was born on Nov. 9, 1941, in Bryan, to Robert S. and Josephine (Pignataro) Brandt. 

Bob graduated from Montpelier High School in 1959.  On Aug. 21, 1965, he married Juanita Briner, and she preceded him in death.

Bettina “Janie” Winters, 68

Bettina “Janie” Winters, 68, of 215 Knoxville Ave., St. Marys, died at 11:05 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, in the Emergency Department of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.

She was born on June 9, 1945, in Celina, the daughter of Harold and Betty (Goodwin) Dunlap.

She is survived by her siblings, James (Sandy) Dunlap of St. Marys, Sandra (Dennis) Kugler of St. Marys, Kathy Ward of St. Marys, Valerie (Danny) Salisbury of St. Marys, Anita (Ron) Savage of St. Marys; by numerous nieces and nephews.
