Daniel L. Hilgeford, 58

Daniel L. Hilgeford, 58, 4869 East 800 North Bryant passed away Thursday afternoon, May 30, 2013, at his residence.  He was born in Celina March 15, 1955 the son of Arnold and Martha (Muhlenkamp) Hilgeford.

He was married Nov. 7, 1975 to Linda Huey who survives.  Surviving are his wife Linda; parents Arnold and Martha Hilgeford of Portland; one son Kurtis (Melinda) Hilgeford of Fort Wayne; three daughters, Kim (Chris) Regedanz of Celina, Christy (Keith) Kahlig of Portland, and Angie (Caleb) Lutes of Portland; one brother; five sisters and five grandchildren.

ST. MARYS — There will be a benefit celebrating the successful heart transplant of a Memorial High School grad this summer.

The Heart Felt Benefit for Elizabeth Sampson, 20, will take place on Aug. 24 at the Howard Johnson Hotel, 1920 Roschman Ave., Lima. The benefit will begin at 5:30 p.m. with hor d’oeuvres, and dinner will follow at 6 p.m. The evening will feature an auction, music, a raffle, and more. Donations are being accepted at Minster Bank in St. Marys, and the money will go toward the Sampson family’s medical bills.

St. Marys girls 3200 meter relay team finishes season on podium

LEXINGTON — The St. Marys 3200 meter relay quartet of junior Kristen Dammeyer, junior Lexi Grothause, senior Marissa Schrolucke and junior Amanda Dues finished its season on the podium. The Roughrider distance relay team finished eighth at the Division II regional meet on Thursday.

With three of the four returning to the regional from last years 3200 relay team, the Roughriders improved eight spots from last year’s 16th place finish.

Schrolucke, the lone senior in the quartet, said it was a great way to cap her senior year.

WAPAKONETA — A 1983 graduate of Waynesfield-Goshen High School and an office manager and legal assistant at a Lima law firm is tabbed to be the next director of the Auglaize County Elections Board.

Man Faces Charge

ST. MARYS — A 25-year-old male has been charged in connection with an alleged break-in of a residence north of St. Marys.

In a news release issued this morning, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said deputies arrested a man Thursday afternoon for allegedly breaking into a garage at a residence north of St. Marys.

Gov. Visits New Bremen

NEW BREMEN — Gov. John Kasich discussed where budget negotiations are going, funding for Grand Lake St. Marys, aid programs and school dollars Wednesday night at the American Legion in New Bremen, where he addressed Auglaize County Republicans during the Auglaize County Republican Women’s Lincoln/Reagan Day Dinner.

Minster sweeps 3200 meter relays at DIII regional

The Minster boys and girls 3200 meter relay teams both won regional titles to highlight the first day of competition at the Division III regional track meet at Piqua on Wednesday.

Both will advance to the state championships next week at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

Marion Local leads the girls standings after the first day with 14 points. Minster is third.

The Minster boys are atop the boys standings with 27.5 points after the first day.

Rocket Club Soars

MINSTER — The students learn the most from failures, teacher Ted Oldiges told the Minster Civic Association members Tuesday night at Arrowhead Golf Club in Minster.

When the rocket club started competing in 2009 with approximately 20 seventh and eighth graders, Oldiges was just looking to broaden their experiences.

“I wanted them to have something more on their college resumes than ‘I played sports, I played sports, I played sports,’” he said.

The first competition the team was disqualified.
