ROCKFORD — The Parkway Panthers had their bats ready Thursday and with seven runs in the first three innings the Panthers defeated the New Knoxville Rangers 11-1 in five innings on a single by Austin Adams that scored Cain Pontsler in a MAC game played at Don Black Stadium in Rockford.

Thursday Softball Round-Up

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys softball team finally got back on the field for the first time in nine days after four straight games were rained out. The Roughriders got greeted back to the diamond by a dominant pitching performance and relentless offensive attack from the unbeaten Shawnee Indians.

Shawnee struck for seven early runs and coasted for a 10-0 five-inning win behind the pitching of Kay Shick at K.C. Geiger Park on Thursday.

Leo J. Osterholt, Sr., 91

April 19, 2013

Leo J. Osterholt, Sr., 91, formerly of Philothea, and most recently of Coldwater, Mich.; passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2013.

He was born on April 17, 1922, in Fort Recovery, to the late Bernard and Johanna (Wenning) Osterholt.

He was married on May 8, 1943, to Natalia “Dee Dee” (Barnhart), who passed away on Jan. 5, 2013.

Mary Wolfe, 70, of St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at her residence.
Arrangements are being completed with the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home (314 W. High St. Chapel) in St. Marys.

Ernest E. Wenning, 81

April 19, 2013

Ernest E. Wenning,  81, of New Bremen, died at 11:15 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2013, at the Elmwood of New Bremen.  

He was born on Nov. 13, 1931, in Carthagena.

He was the son of Ben H. and Bernadine (Weitzel) Wenning.  

Gerhard S. Kuhr, 86

Gerhard S. Kuhr, 86, of 124 Lakewood Court, St. Marys, died at 3:50 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, at the St. Marys Living Center.

He was born on Sept. 25, 1926, in Brno, Czech Republic, the son of Frank and Josephine (Schefczik) Kuhr.

He married Naida Sweet on July 21, 1951, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 18, 2007.

He is survived by his four children, Irene Kuhr of St. Marys, Mark (Rosie) Kuhr of Celina, John Kuhr of Lima and Ann (Mike) Brugger of Englewood; by two grandchildren, Charlotte and Michelle.

Virginia R. “Ginny” Forthofer, 90

Virginia R. “Ginny” Forthofer, 90, of Russia, died at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center, Minster.

She was born on April 24, 1922, in Newport, to the late John and Mary (Moorman) Perin. 

She married Lawrence F. Forthofer on April 24, 1946, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Newport.

He preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 2000.

Rocket Club Set For Launch

MINSTER — After a canceled test launch and two rescheduled launches, the Minster Rocket Club has passed every requirement and qualified to present its rocket to NASA engineers in Huntsville, Ala., on Saturday.

The club left Wednesday for a four to five day intensive session with engineers, culminating in a Saturday or Sunday launch, weather permitting.

Suspect Makes Initial Appearance

CELINA —  The alleged gunman in the Grube double homicide made his initial appearance in a Mercer County courtroom Wednesday.

Flanked by his attorney Donna Post, Trevin M. Sanders, 19, looked down at the defense table for much of the approximately hourlong hearing in Mercer County Juvenile Court as Judge Mary Pat Zitter read the complaint against him. Sanders is accused of shooting and killing Robert Grube, 70, and daughter his Colleen Grube, 47, in November 2011.
