Event To Help Local

April 30, 2013

CELINA — Students are raising money to pay for their classmate’s heart transplant with a 5K called “Find the Beat Again” at Wright State University’s Lake Campus at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Friends of WSU student Rachel Doseck planned the event, Doseck said, to feel like they had some way to help her after an extended illness caused by her body rejecting her heart transplant. She received another heart on Jan.10.

Doseck told The Evening Leader what it’s like to have your heart stop in the hospital.

ST. MARYS — Memorial High School students were decked out in sequins, glitter, top hats and ties Saturday night for the Promenade in Memorial Park, where friends and family watched them walk the local version of the red carpet.

The students gave a nod to the theme “Fantasea” by giving the first catwalk opportunity to students in sea-themed costumes.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to come out and see the school and the students,” said Becky Macwhinney, of the Chamber of Commerce, who helped coordinate the event.

Rider Looks to Future

ST. MARYS — If senior Charlie Eberle, 18, had to describe his final year at Memorial High School in a phrase, “living it up” would hit the mark.

Eberle and his friends made a promise of sorts to each other to make the most of the end of their high school careers and do things they had never done before. They collectively decided to be a part of the high school’s winter musical. A football player, Eberle had never set foot near a stage before this year.

“We stepped out of our comfort zone a little bit,” he said.

NEW BREMEN — Colleen Zunk, who works with autistic young people, says the difference between average preschool age children and autism spectrum students is a lack of social and communication skills.

“Generally a child who has autism spectrum disorder...(is) disconnected from other people  and unable to interact with people and objects,” she said. “Instead of playing with a toy the way they normally would, the child uses the object in a way that stimulates the senses.”
