Dewaine E. Byerley, 78

March 14, 2013

Dewaine E. Byerley, 78, of St. Marys, died at 3:35 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at St. Marys Living Center.

 He was born on Feb. 7, 1935, in Celina, to William A. and Florence M. (Cook) Byerley.

 On Nov. 10, 1956, in St. Marys, he married Shirley "Shirt" Klosterman, who died on Sept. 7, 2008.

Reuben D. Deerhake, 84

Reuben D. Deerhake, 84, of 17226 N. 130 Ave., Sun City West, Ariz., died at 1:30 a.m.  Thursday, March 7, 2013, in Sun City West.

He was born on June 22, 1928, in New Knoxville, the son of LeRoy and Laura (Vordermark) Deerhake.

He married Pauline Howard on May 10, 1947, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 2012.

He is survived by his three brothers, the Rev. Marvin (Mary) Deerhake of Bicknell, Ind., Robert (Sandy) Deerhake of New Knoxville and Gene (Mary) Deerhake  of Marblehead.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Update: Shooting On Derrick Street

Sources have confirmed to The Evening Leader that an officer-involved shooting took place Wednesday night in the 600 block of Derrick Street in St. Marys. More details will be published when released by law enforcement officials.

The scene is being secured and taped off. Witnesses at the scene told the newspaper they heard gun shots in the area.

Crews Fixing Leak

ST. MARYS — Crews were kept busy Tuesday locating and repairing a natural gas leak in downtown St. Marys.

St. Mary Interim Safety-Service Director Greg Foxhoven said the city received a phone call at 11:30 p.m. Monday reporting a natural gas leak at 201 W. Spring St. City crews started marking utility lines early Tuesday morning and crews from Dominion arrived on the scene shortly after midnight to begin the task of locating and repairing the leak.

“They requested our people respond to give the location of the city utilities,” Foxhoven said.

Zane Miller, 86

March 13, 2013

Zane Miller, 86, of 102 Ohio St., St. Marys, was found dead at his residence on Monday, March 11, 2013.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1926, in Mendon, the son of George and Ruth (Baker) Miller.

He married Geraldine McMullen on Oct. 16, 1944, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 1997.

Virgil E. Beam, 76

Virgil E. Beam, 76, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:13 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1937, in Belmore, the son of Fred W. and Doris (Newell) Beam, who preceded him in death.  

On Oct. 22, 1960, he married Joyce B. Fortman, and she survives.

Nicholas S. Bertke, 21

Nicholas S. Bertke, 21, of 2621 State Route 363, Minster, died on Monday, March 11, 2013, at his home. 

He was born on March 8, 1992, in Minster, to Timothy and Teresa (Bergman) Bertke, both surviving in Minster. 

He is also survived by brothers and sister, Andrew Bertke and fiancé Mackenzie Buschur, North Star, Sarah Bertke and Jonathan Bertke, both at home; two sets of grandparents; a great-grandmother.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joshua Bertke and a grandfather.

Mark Aloysius Keller, 64

Mark Aloysius Keller, 64, of Vandalia, passed away on Wednesday March 6, 2013.

Mark was born on March 28, 1948, in St. Henry, to the late Benedict and Elizabeth Bergman Keller.

He grew up in St. Henry, graduating from St. Henry High School in 1966. He attended the University of Dayton and received his BS degree in mechanical engineering in 1970.

New Knoxville's Horstman named Special Mention All-Ohio

New Knoxville junior guard Haley Horstman earned Special Mention All-Ohio honors as the Associated Press announced its Division IV girls list on Tuesday night.

Horstman averaged 16.9 points, 3.9 steals, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Horstman led the Rangers to a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference title and a 19-win regular season.

Waynesfield-Goshen’s Kaylee Patton, a 5-foot-9 senior who averaged 26.5 points per game, was named Second Team All-Ohio.
