Nicholas F. Bergman, 88, of Botkins, died at 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center.
He was born on Aug. 23, 1924, in Egypt, to the late Fred and Katherine (Dircksen) Bergman.
On Sept. 27, 1947, he married Norma Berning in St. Patrick, and she survives in Botkins.

Mary Knapke, born and raised in Minster, was announced the 2012 Citizen of the Year at the “Tropical Paradise” celebration held Feb. 8 at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
OTTAWA — The St. Marys boys basketball team found its signature victory in one of the toughest places to win in the Western Buckeye League.
St. Marys senior Austin James hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds and the Roughriders stunned No. 4-ranked Ottawa-Glandorf 49-48 on Friday night at The Supreme Court.
“It was a great win,” St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said. “Our kids really needed this. They’ve played so well in parts of so many games and we put it together for the entire game.”
FORT RECOVERY — For a quarter, the New Knoxville Rangers couldn’t miss.
New Knoxville hit seven of eight 3-pointers in the first quarter, built a 21-point first-half lead and then staved off state-ranked Fort Recovery’s desperate comeback in the fourth quarter to earn a 65-62 win at the Fort Site Gymnasium on Friday night.
Fort Recovery’s Elijah Kahlig’s 3-pointer at the buzzer caromed off and New Knoxville celebrated near mid-court.

NEW BREMEN 54, MARION LOCAL 46
NEW BREMEN — It was a rough and physical contest Friday night at New Bremen and with scoring and time from the bench players the New Bremen Cardinals were able to hold off a stubborn Marion Local Flyer squad 54-46 in a MAC contest at New Bremen.
In the game two Flyers fouled out and three more players finished with four fouls, while New Bremen had no players foul out but ended with three players with four fouls.

ST. MARYS — If one asks St. Marys FFA sponsor and teacher Jack McBride if his FFA students are future farmers, he says no, not for the most part.
A more appropriate description would be future leaders, he explains, because while only 2 percent of Americans are farmers more than 20 percent are involved in agriculturally-related fields.
ST. MARYS — Senior Roughrider Alex Mielke is the kind of person who goes with the flow and he does not shy from hard work or from new experiences.
When his girlfriend’s family asked him to try his hand at water skiing on the lake behind their house, Mielke hopped right on. When his friends were all trying out for band, he picked up drumsticks and auditioned with them.
Mielke’s main focus as far as athletics is running. He is a member of both the track and cross country teams for Memorial High School.
ST. MARYS — A slew of changes have been proposed regarding deer hunting in Ohio.
During a meeting on Wednesday, the Ohio Wildlife Council proposed an October antlerless-only, white-tailed deer muzzleloader hunting season, extended hunting hours and new bag limits on a county-by-county basis. The changes, if approved by the Ohio Wildlife Council, would take effect for the 2013-14 hunting seasons.
NEW BREMEN — This summer, New Bremen will host more than 3,000 cyclists during a their two-day pitt stop in the village as part of the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) — effectively doubling the village’s population for 48 hours.
The village held a public meeting Thursday night at the Lockkeeper’s house to inform residents about the event and what to expect when the cyclists roll into town.
Michael “Mick” Gabes, 64, of 133 Lago Vue Court in St. Marys, died at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Lima.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1948, in Lima, to Donald and Connie (Cook) Gabes.
On July 10, 1993, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Celina, he married Wendy S. Schisler, who survives.
