St. Marys diver Madison Taylor qualifies for state

BOWLING GREEN — St. Marys sophomore Madison Taylor is headed to state after finishing second at the Division II district diving meet at Bowling Green State University on Wednesday.

Taylor scored a 359.25 to place second and advance to the state meet on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

The St. Marys swim team will be sending 10 competitors to the district meet on Friday and Saturday.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2003

This week in 2003, the St. Marys Lady Roughriders concluded their regular season at 16-4 overall with a 51-39 win over the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds, who ended their campaign with a 15-5 record.  

The Thunderbirds enjoyed a tight 12-10 advantage at the conclusion of the first quarter, before the Roughriders outscored them by eight in the second period to take a 22-16 lead at the break.

Minster Probing Vandalism

MINSTER — The Minster Police Department is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads an arrest related to a string of vandalism throughout the village.

Officers are investigating a slew of incidents that have taken place during the past several months in Minster. Minster Police Chief Randy Houseworth said officers have taken numerous complaints from residents regarding tires flattened by roofing nails that were left on the driveways and streets. It appears, Houseworth noted, that several village and school employees have been targets.

Joseph W. "Joe" Pickering, 86, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:15 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System. Arrangements are incomplete at this time at the Bayliff and Eley Funeral Home.

Helen Ralston, 98, of St. Marys, died on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at St. Marys Living Center.
 Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.

Program Helps Local Women

ST. MARYS — Licensed cosmetologists met with women who have cancer Monday as part of the Look Good, Feel Better campaign to discuss ways to look their best during chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

In the hour and a half program at St. Marys Community Public Library, volunteers Theresia Hedrick and Barb Thomas covered cancer treatment-related appearance problems, such as dry skin, paleness and hair loss. They worked with two women teaching blush, natural eye pencil application and gave each woman a kit donated by the American Cancer Society.

Ellen Edna Schierholt Huckriede, 87

Ellen Edna Schierholt Huckriede, 87, of St. Marys, died on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Otterbein Retirement Community on Grand Lake St. Marys.

She was born on July 17, 1925, in New Bremen, the daughter of Emma (Heitman) and Frank Schierholt who preceded her in death. She was married to Earl Huckriede on Dec. 12, 1944, at St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen.

Richard A. Frosdick, 84

February 11, 2013

Richard A. Frosdick, 84, of Celina, died on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at the St. Marys Living Center.

He was born on May 19, 1928, in Oakfield, N.Y., to parents Harold and Edith (Andrews) Frosdick.

On May 24, 1986, he married Patricia (Sullivan) Lentz, who survives.

Roy E. Fradd, 96

February 11, 2013

Roy E. Fradd, 96, of Maplewood, died on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Heartland of Bellefontaine.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1916, in Cedarville, to Marion and Ella (Waugh) Fradd.

On June 8, 1935, in Ironton, he married Josie E. Lambert, who died on Aug. 25, 2009.

He is survived by three daughters, Wilma “Jean” Fisher  of Mesah, Ariz., Ruth Evelyn Shaw  of Bellefontaine and Beulah Greenbaum  of Bellefontaine; by 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren;   16 great-great-grandchildren.
