NEW BREMEN — New Bremen Middle School students showcased their innovation Thursday at the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fair revealing not just their ability to invent, but also the nature of the problems they encounter in their everyday lives.
Teacher Tracy Steinke said that the fair started in 2010 as a requirement of the STEM grant the school received.
“We’re trying to get them more engineering focused, looking at problem solving,” she said.
Howard B. Putman, 79, of Spencerville, died on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at his home. He was born on Feb. 21, 1933, in Willshire, to George H. and Emma Fredaricka (Pflueger) Putman.
On Aug. 16, 1958, he married Norma J. Ralston who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Norma, are two daughters Leisha (Troy) Comer of Wapakoneta, and Leslie (John) Ringwald of Van Wert; three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; a brother; a sister; a sister-in-law.
Christopher Huff, 47, of Celina, died on Wednesday Feb. 20, 2013. Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.
Kerry Dicke, 61, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, surrounded by loved ones, having succumbed to complications following open heart surgery.
Kerry was born on July 17, 1951, in Austin, Texas, to Dorothy Jo and William Putnam Sexton.
She graduated from West Orange High School and attended Lamar University before transferring to Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. At Trinity she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Theater and met her husband of 29 years, Dane Dicke.
Carol Elizabeth (Kuhlman) Ramey, 84, of Akron, passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2013, after a courageous three-month battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Carol was born on July 29, 1928, at home in New Knoxville, the daughter of Reinhart W. and Dorothy (Kuhlmann) Kuhlman.
ST. MARYS — Failing equipment is to blame for a pair of power outages this week that hit the city of St. Marys.
NEW BREMEN — New Bremen spelling bee winner Alexa Paulus told her mother, Teresa Paulus, walking into the bee Tuesday night to have low expectations for her performance.
“Mom, I’m not going to win — don’t be ashamed,” Alexa Paulus recalled saying.
WAPAKONETA — When the 2013 Auglaize County Beef queen heard her name read as the next to serve as a representative for the Auglaize County Cattlemen’s Association, she said she thought for a moment they read someone’s else’s name before the realization struck her.
ST. MARYS — Local car dealerships saw an increase in sales during what some believe will be a year that brings back the vitality of the car market after a few rough recession years.
Jason Black, of Bud’s Chevrolet Buick, said the car market is “exploding.”
“This is going to be a huge year,” he said. “You’re looking pre-recession numbers, really. Nobody’s purchased cars in last three to four years, which means cars on the road are averaging 10 years. There’s only so much life in these cars.”
