75 years ago: St. Marys City Councilors discovered a previously approved pay raise could not pertain to them because under Ohio law, pay increases for council would go into effect for the next group of city councilors after an election.

Ralph Siferd, of Wapakoneta, announced his candidacy as a county representative.

Racers Hit Local Track

ST. MARYS — It’s a cold Sunday afternoon in January, but at Lost in the 50s Diner, it might as well be derby season in the summer, as competitors zip down a 16-volt electrified slot car track with the cars they design and race most weekends at speeds from 30 and 70 mph, although one track, a new track, has a record of 140 mph from the last owner.

Paul G. Fleck, 80

Paul G. Fleck, 80, of 650 Maple St. in Celina, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at the Gardens of Celina.

He was born on July 30, 1932, in Celina, to the late Matthew and Mary (Mertz) Fleck.

On June 6, 1953, he married Rosemary Mader, who live in Celina.

Linda Diane (Smith) Stevens, 64

Linda Diane (Smith) Stevens, 64, of 209 E. Oak St. in Celina, passed away at 4:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at her residence in Celina.

She was born on Oct. 12, 1948, in Evansville, Ind., to Rev. George and Joanne (Oran) Smith.

On Sept. 23, 1966, Linda married George E. Stevens Sr., who lives in Celina.

Celina beats St. Marys for 7th straight time

CELINA — Celina’s defensive pressure took its toll midway through the second half, as a physically and mentally fatigued St. Marys squad turned the ball over and watched the Bulldogs turn the miscues into points.

Celina wore down the Roughriders and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 71-52 win at a packed Celina Fieldhouse on Friday night. It’s the seventh straight win for Celina over St. Marys, a winning streak that dates back to 2005.

New Bremen escapes Minster with MAC victory, 45-43

MINSTER —New Bremen made a go-ahead basket and got two defensive stops in the game’s final 30 seconds to keep pace in the Midwest Athletic Conference and down rival Minster, 45-43, on Friday night.

With 23.9 seconds left Carson Manger’s offensive stickback gave the Cardinals a 44-43 lead.

After a Minster turnover, New Bremen’s Luke Schwieterman knocked down a free throw to give the Cardinals a two-point lead.

Delphos St. John's remains tied atop MAC after win over New Knoxville

NEW KNOXVILLE – The Delphos St. John’s boys basketball team used a good first half to get a lead against the New Knoxville Rangers and they rode that in the second half to defeat the Rangers 65-47 in a key MAC game played at The Barn.

The Blue Jays led 18-7 after one quarter and 40-19 at the half.

Clora G. Barker, 90

January 18, 2013

Clora G. Barker, 90, of Mendon, died on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.

She was born on April 1, 1922, in Van Wert County to Carl and Sarah (McCoy) Mohler.

On March 18, 1943, she married Charles Barker, who preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 2003.

She is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Jerry) Steiner of Mendon; two granddaughters; five great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Rider Gets Ahead At Wright State

ST. MARYS — Roughrider Marissa Schrolucke will have several college classes under her belt by the time she graduates in May.

Schrolucke, 18, participates in the post-secondary program offered between Wright State University Lake Campus and Memorial High School.

Minster Schools Address Bullying

MINSTER — Minster high school and middle school students were asked to pledge to stop verbal, physical, relational and online bullying Friday afternoon during a special assembly that focused on leadership.

Speaker Jerry Ackerman illustrated the problem, noting while verbal and physical bullying are common, and relational bullying occurs when a group ostracizes outsiders, many students would text or post online material that they would never say to a person.

That’s an act he called cowardly.
