Joan H. Sunderman, 81, of Hilliard, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013.
Joan was born in New Bremen and graduated from New Bremen High School, class of 1949. She worked as a secretary at both New Bremen High School and Ohio Dominican University. Joan fell in love with the late Duane Sunderman and the two were married in 1953 and began their lives together. Joan was a graceful lady who loved to listen, help and care for others. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where she helped with many organizations throughout the years and met wonderful friends.

ST. MARYS — A former mayor has decided to seek a seat on St. Marys City Council this year.
Greg Freewalt confirmed to The Evening Leader he will seek the Democratic nomination for the 3rd Ward City Council seat in the May primary. Current 3rd Ward Councilor Bill Slemmons announced he plans to retire at the end of the year — opening the door for Freewalt to seek the position.
NEW BREMEN — For New Bremen residents Ben Tuttle, 15, and Paul Luft, 16, life as typical high school students changed entirely when their guitar teacher Jeff King approached them with the idea of creating a country band.
“He kind of put us together,” said Luft, the band’s lead vocalist.
Luft had been taking lessons from King for about a year, then stopped for a year.
Around the time he resumed lessons, Tuttle also started taking lessons from King.
“It was pretty exciting,” Ben said.
Curtiss E. Hager, 86, of St. Marys, formerly of Spencerville, died at 3:54 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at the St. Marys Living Center, with family at his side.
He had lived there since October 2012.
He was born on Jan. 27, 1926, in Logan Township, Auglaize County, the son of Earl and Elma (Walther) Hager, who preceded him in death.
On June 4, 1949, he married Ruthela Wagner, and she survives in St. Marys.
Emmett H. Shoup Jr., 70, of 2011 Chadwick Drive, St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born on Oct. 3, 1942, in Moulton, the son of Emmett and Evelyn (Katter) Shoup Sr.
He married Sandra K. Moots on May 25, 1963, and she survives at the residence.
Patrick Engle, 61, of rural Mendon, died on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on Aug. 22, 1951, in Lima, to Orville M. and Catherine L. “Midge” (Nolan) Engle, both of whom preceded him in death.
His companion, Betty Phillips, survives at the residence.

Judy A. Louth, 77, of Spencerville, died at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at the Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton.
She was born on July 2, 1935, in Spencerville, the daughter of Kenneth and Bernadine (Schmidt) Harbison, who preceded her in death.
On April 30, 1955, she married Russell W. Louth, and he died on Jan. 18, 2012.
Survivors include three children, Jennifer (Tim) Barnes of St. Marys, Amy (Daniel) Miller of Fremont, David (Linda) Louth of Lafayette; eight grandchildren, a sister.
Leroy Earl Lower Jr., 62, of St. Marys, died at 11:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at VA Medical Center in Dayton.
He was born on June 10, 1950, in Kendallville, Ind. to Leroy and Martha (Daughtery) Lower Sr.
Survivors include three daughters, Flora Belle Lower of Glendale, Ariz., Lydia Lower of Glendale, Ariz., and Amy Lower of Winter Haven, Fla.; three sons, Luke Lower of Glendale, Ariz., Reuben Lower of Glendale, Ariz. and Sean Lower of Lakeland, Fla; three sisters.
Sharon E. Bakhtiarian 70, of Wapakoneta died at 3:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at her residence.
She was born on Jan. 30, 1942, in Portland, Ind., to Arthur P. and Marciel Tyndall–Shull.
Her father preceded her in death and her mother survives in Wapakoneta. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Raymond Shull.
She is also survived by two daughters, Sarah Cox of Nevada and Suzanne Harris of Okla.; a sister, Patricia (Larry) Baeumel of Cridersville; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Carolyn Schultz Hudson, 85, a lifelong resident of St. Marys, passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2013.
It would be difficult to live in St. Marys without knowing what a wonderful and kind person Carolyn was.
Born on July 20, 1927, Carolyn was the youngest of four children (Evelyn, Howard, Anna Louise and Carolyn) born to Vernon and Carrie Stroh Schultz.
