NEW BREMEN — The village of New Bremen will hold a special council meeting at noon today at the Municipal Center, 214 N. Washington St., New Bremen. The reason for the meeting is to rescind Ordinance 2013-11-25 concerning water rates.
Vivian E. Elshoff, 96, of Lake City, Fla. and formerly of New Knoxville, died at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at the Haven Hospice at the Swaney Valley Care Center in Lake City, Fla.
She was born on July 9, 1917, in New Knoxville.
She was the daughter of George and Sarah (Holtkamp) Fledderjohann.
On Aug. 31, 1940, she married Calvin G. Elshoff, who died on Feb. 13, 2009.
Ruth M. Niekamp, 84, of New Bremen, died at 5:26 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at the Elmwood Assisted Living of New Bremen.
She was born on Aug. 4, 1929, in Carthagena. She was the daughter of William and Philomena (Clune) Gerlach.
Earl V. Bricker, 92, of Greenville, passed away at 6:02 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
He was born on May 22, 1921, in Celina, the son of the late John K. and Mabel (Rush) Bricker.
Douglas L. Schmidt, 75, of 9526 Rice Road in Celina, died at 3:05 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was born on Jan. 4, 1938, in Celina, the son of Chester and Marie (Hatfield) Schmidt.
He married Joyce Heppeard on Sept. 26, 1998, and she survives at the residence.
Kenton J. “Kwboy Ken” Suchland, 69, 830 Hackney St., St. Marys, died at 11:32 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 2, 1944, in Mercer County, the son of Earl and Mildred (Fulk) Suchland Sr. He married Tura Reinhart on July 2, 1966, and she survives at the residence.
ST. MARYS — Mark Ernst has been named the new St. Marys Police Chief, effective today.
ST. MARYS — The St. Marys boys basketball team looked like it was on the cusp of running away with Saturday night’s game against Marion Local, holding a a nine-point lead in the waning minutes of the third quarter. Instead, it was the Flyers who ended up speeding away.
Marion Local outscored St. Marys 18-5 in the fourth quarter with a momentum-shifting defensive change to fullcourt pressure and a 3-2 zone and knocked off the Roughriders 45-38.
CELINA — Crews in Mercer County rescued a couple after their vehicle became stranded in flood waters.
Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said his office received a call at 9:22 a.m. Sunday of a truck stranded in high water on Tama Road between Stose Road and U.S. 127. The driver of the vehicle, Dennis Bollenbacher, 57, 1065 Strable Road, Rockford, stated on the call that the water had filled the compartment of the vehicle to up to the steering wheel. The vehicle was a white GMC truck belonging to VanTilburg Farms.
Thomas J. Rable Sr., 79, of Celina, passed away at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at the Celina Manor Nursing Home.
He was born on July 1, 1934, in St. Marys, to the late Victor J. and Matilda (Diehl) Rable.
On June 2, 1962, he married Marilyn Pleiman, who survives in Celina.
Also surviving are his children, Thomas Jr. and Rosann Rable of Celina, Mary and Ted Loose of Springboro, six grandchildren, Matthew, Miranda, Mariah, Marcus, Sara, Kristi and his brother, John Rable, of St. Marys.
