Wapak earns first win for Selvey against Minster

WAPAKONETA — After giving up the lead briefly to start the second half, the Wapakoneta Redskins quickly rebounded and closed out the Minster Wildcats in a tight ball game Saturday, giving first-year coach Doug Selvey his first win with the Redskins.

After leading virtually the entire first half, Wapak quickly regained the lead and held onto it the rest of the game in a 53-48 victory Saturday over Minster in the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

Walter A. Strayer, 89

Walter A. Strayer, 89, of New Knoxville, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima.

Born on Jan. 3, 1924, in Shelby County, Mr. Strayer was the son of Edgar and Loverna (Earhart) Strayer.

He married Norma Mae Partington on June 10, 1948, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1999.

Together, they raised five children, Mary Ann Pence of Houston, Carol (Bruce) Cron of Fletcher, Cheryl (Kenneth) Carr of Sidney, Alan (Kristi) Strayer of Arcanum and Janice (Larry) Gockley, of Sidney.

Wilma “Jean” Mahaffey, 73

Wilma “Jean” Mahaffey, 73, of Bucyrus, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, in Mansfield Med Central. 

Wilma was born on March 14, 1940, in Wapakoneta, to the late George William and Ina Mae (Webb) Howell. 

She was married on Oct. 24, 1959, to Robert “Bob” Mahaffey, who preceded her in death on Oct. 21, 2000.

Lois J. Ruck, 77

December 16, 2013

 Lois J. Ruck, 77, of 17353 Maier-Barber Road in St. Marys, died at 8:43 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice.

She was born on Aug. 26, 1936, in Waterville, N.Y. to Albert and Florabell (Carpenter) Tarbox.

On Dec. 22, 1957, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Defiance, she married James R. Ruck, who survives.
