NEW KNOXVILLE — Rita Thalen, a retired naturalist, taught and performed at the United Methodist Church in New Knoxville Tuesday night in a presentation on how the Civil War affected women.
Fred Stanley Holec, 73, died on Oct. 6, 2013, at Coastal Carolina Hospital after several months recovering from esophageal cancer.
He was born in Elyria, on April 22, 1940, to the late Fred Joseph Holec and Rose Frances Holec.
Mr. Holec graduated from Elyria High School in 1958.
He received a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy in Ada in 1962.
Evelyn R. Burger, 87, of 808 Hackney St. in St. Marys, died 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at her residence.
She was born on Aug. 5, 1926, in Celina, to Harold and Margaret (Lehman) Bender.
On Dec. 20, 1947, in Celina, she married Leo “Jack” Burger, who died on Oct. 25, 1985.

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls soccer team played the match head coach Paul Dingledine has been hoping for, with crisp passing, strong finishes for goals and a shutout from his defense to close out the home portion of the Roughriders’ schedule.
Bela Godinho and Bailey Gottschalk scored goals as St. Marys shut out Fort Jennings for a 2-0 win on Monday at Roughrider Field.
The Western Buckeye League and Midwest Athletic Conference each have a team ranked No. 1 in the latest Associated Press Ohio football poll.
Marion Local (6-0) is the top team in Division VII. The Flyers stayed perfect with a 28-14 win over Delphos St. John’s last Saturday. The Flyers travel to St. Henry on Friday night.
ST. MARYS — St. Marys Roughrider senior Trent Wale’s passion for football is clear with every game that passes this season.
Wale, who plays varsity for the Roughriders, has been playing since he was 9.
“I’ve always loved football and have always wanted to play,” he said.
Dianna J. Bell, 75, of Cridersville, died at 1:03 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System following a short illness.
She was born on Dec. 31, 1937, in Lima, a daughter of Richard C. and Margaret Eva Shinaberry Davisson, who are deceased.
Her stepmother, Clara Davisson, and her stepfather, Benton Carper, are also deceased.
On Sept. 4, 1955, she married Truman J. Bell, who survives in Cridersville.
