Minster Sweeps MAC Cross Country Championships

COLDWATER — The Minster boys and girls cross country teams captured Midwest Athletic Conference cross country titles, fending off strong competition atop the leaderboard to add to the storied programs’ list of conference titles.

The Minster boys scored 58 points and held off rival New Bremen, which had 61 points for the MAC crown. St. Henry finished third. New Knoxville turned in a sixth-place finish with 146 points.

St. Marys Boys Soccer Wins First WBL Title

ST. MARYS — After the St. Marys boys soccer team  scored a few early goals, Thursday night turned into more of a coronation than a contest.

The St. Marys boys soccer team clinched the program’s first Western Buckeye League championship with an 8-0 against Van Wert at Roughrider Field on Thursday.

“I couldn’t be prouder,” St. Marys head coach Dave Ring said. “This is just a fantastic moment for our team.”

Picnic To Help Local FD

NEW KNOXVILLE — The record for an extrication using jaws of life is around one minute 30 seconds at the annual firemen’s picnic and extrication contest in New Knoxville, but firefighters will be pushing their limits on Saturday so that they will be prepared in the event of an accident.

The competition, at 5 p.m., will be preceded by an opening ceremony at 3 p.m. with food and beverages, and the sale of 600 chicken dinners starting at 4 p.m. in New Knoxville Community Park. A reverse raffle will begin at 6 p.m., while at 8 p.m. the band The Leftoverz will play.

Norman R. Thiebeau, 73

Norman R. Thiebeau, 73, of 14198 Glynwood-New Knoxville Road in St. Marys died at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 at St. Marys Living Center.

He was born on Nov. 13, 1939 in Versailles to Robert and Druscilla (Berger) Thiebeau.

On Nov. 27, 1959, in Tazwell, Tenn., he married Dorothy Rhodes, who died July 28, 2008.

He is survived by a son Richard (Mindy) Thieubeau  of St. Marys, and three grandchildren, Shannon, Casey and Spencer Thiebeau, as well as two sisters, Connie Highley of Del Rio, Texas; and Darlene Kruse of Vandalia.

Vonnie G. (Finke) Martin, 70

October 11, 2013

Vonnie G. (Finke) Martin, 70, of 1201 W. High St., was called home while surrounded by loved ones in the home of her daughter at 11:45 p.m.  Monday, Oct. 9, 2013.

It was the end of a rapid and progressive battle of cancer but a new beginning of pain-free eternal happiness and where she shall wait for her loved ones.

A look back at area sports headlines from this week 50, 25 and 10 years ago in Auglaize County:

50 Years Ago This Week – 1963

Fifty years ago this week in 1963, the St. Marys Roughriders hosted the Coldwater Cavaliers at Memorial Stadium and rebounded from their loss the previous week by thumping the Cavs 26-8 in front of a crowd of nearly 3,000 in the stands.  

The Roughriders jumped in front early as Ronnie Jones hit pay dirt with a six-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.  

Riders Nab Honor

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys City Schools District Board of Education approved a resolution of commendation for students Kristen Dammeyer and TJ Wirth as Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program during their meeting Wednesday night.

The students placed in the top 5 percent of all students who took the SAT test in October 2012. They were two of 34,000 students to receive this commended status.
