St. Marys girls cross country finishes second at WBL championship meet

ST. MARYS – When senior Kristen Dammeyer took up cross country this fall, she was joining a veteran St. Marys girls cross country team with high hopes for 2013.

Dammeyer and the Riders fulfilled those aspirations on Saturday with a second-place finish and a four-place improvement from last year’s WBL championship meet.

The senior-led St. Marys girls cross country team had six runners finish in the top 22 as the Roughriders captured second place on their home course at the WBL meet at the course near Memorial High School.

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville/Washington Township Fire Department won top honors in the extrication competition they hosted on Saturday, pulling two Rescue Randy mock victims from the back seat of an SUV after removing the doors using the jaws of life.

​MINSTER — The Minster Wildcats didn’t waste much time Friday night getting on the scoreboard in front of a homecoming crowd. The Wildcats forced the Parkway Panthers to punt and on one 54-yard run by junior Sam Dues the Wildcats had a quick lead.

 Minster never looked back 41-19 victory.

Defiance storms back from 17-point deficit to stun St. Marys 27-23

ST. MARYS — Defiance quarterback Will Batt refused to let his team lay down when the Bulldogs found themselves down by 17 points to St. Marys midway through the third quarter on Friday night.

“I got into my team,” said Batt, who rushed for three touchdowns. “I told them this is my senior year and we’re not losing this game. We’re winning out. I just got on them.”

The Bulldogs responded, handing St. Marys the latest gut-punching loss in an 0-7 season that’s had so many close calls.

Norman Binkley, 64

Norman Binkley, 64, of Wapakoneta, died on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.
Arrangements are being completed with Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.

Barbara Mayme Hassloch, 95

October 11, 2013

Barbara Mayme “Grandma Babydoll” Hassloch, 95, of 117 S. LeBlonde St., Celina, passed away at 12:52 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at the Celina Manor Nursing Home in Celina. She was born on June 11, 1918, in Celina to the late Elijah and Elizabeth (Coil) Winans.

On June 30, 1949, she married William Hassloch, who died in 1966.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Linda and William Sieber of Celina, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a nephew.

Kristi K. Osborn, 38

October 11, 2013

Kristi K. Osborn, 38, of Anna died at 6:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 at her residence after a two year battle with cancer.

She was born on June 7, 1975, in Toledo to David V. and Lyndal K. Rhoads who survive in Delphos.

On July 11, 2009, she married Tony D. Osborn and he survives in Anna.

Survivors also include four children; Zachary, Victoria, Alexis and Riley Osborn,  a grandson, a sister, a mother-in-law and many family and friends.

Irene Shinabery, 88

October 11, 2013

Irene Shinabery, 88, formerly of 220 Villa Nova Blvd., St. Marys, died at 5:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at St. Marys Living Center.

She was born April 15, 1925, in Mercer County to Andrew and Velma (Douglas) Linn.

On April 29, 1944, she married Richard “Mope” Shinabery, who died October 28, 1997.

Family Stresses SIDS Awareness

ST. MARYS — When Jessica Phlipot awoke on July 30, 2011, to feed her baby, she discovered Landen Phlipot, 3-months-old, blue and unresponsive.

She called 911. Her husband, Joey, was on a machine for sleep apnea, and she struggled to wake him, then tried banging on neighbors’ doors near their Minster home.

When paramedics arrived, minutes after the call came, they took the baby to the hospital, but the child had already passed away, a victim of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
