ST. MARYS — A local law enforcement official is warning residents about the dangers of using exploding targets for sport shooting.
Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said his office has handled several recent complaints regarding the use of Tannerite or exploding rifle targets. The targets, which are legally sold at shooting supply stores, are designed to explode when shot with a certain caliber bullet.
The issue, Solomon said, is that residents are purchasing the mixture and mixing large amounts of it to make large explosion.
ST. MARYS — After a brief hiatus, Bluesfest is returning to St. Marys.
K.C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee members Rees McKee and Chris Botkin announced the return of Bluesfest during Monday night’s St. Marys City Council meeting. The festival, which was held in K.C. Geiger Park from 2007 to 2010, is scheduled to be held on Aug. 24.
ST. MARYS — A local restaurant teamed up with a group of students to help fight cancer Monday night.
Beer Barrel Pizza hosted a benefit night for Memorial High School’s Relay For Life group Monday night. People who go to the restaurant on benefit nights can present their receipts to the group’s representative after dining and a portion of the money goes to support the group’s cause.
In the case of Monday night’s benefit, 10 percent of customers’ bills will go to support Relay For Life’s search for a cure for cancer.
Kathryn “Katie” Diedrich, 84, of 318 N. Wayne St., St. Marys, died at 1:02 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at her daughter’s residence in Jackson Center.
She was born on April 12, 1928, in Moulton, the daughter of Robert and Opal (Katter) Crusie.
She married Carmon Diedrich on Aug. 29, 1945, and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1989.
William E. Burd, 82, of Celina, died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at Mercer Health in Coldwater, of natural causes.
He was born on Aug. 8, 1930, in New Bremen, to Arthur and Agnes Ridenour Burd, who preceded him in death.
On June 19, 1948, he married Eva Lou Schmidt, who survives in Celina.
Alma E. Kuest, 97, of New Bremen, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at the Otterbein Retirement Community of St. Marys. Services are pending and being handled by the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home of New Bremen.
Colleen Ann Heckler, 86, of 312 Oak St. in Celina, passed away at 7:20 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born on July 4, 1926, in Stanley, Wis., to the late Charles and Loretta (Trierweiler) Baldeshwiler.
On April 27, 1946, she married Dale Heckler, who died on Sept. 20, 1999.
Daniel E. Flaute, 44, of 414 Magnolia St. in Celina, passed away at 11:05 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at his residence in Celina, with his family.
Dan was born on Feb. 7, 1968, in Celina, to Roger and Margaret (Behm) Flaute of Celina.
On Nov. 16, 1991, he married his loving wife, Angie Fortman.
Also surviving are his three sons, Cole Flaute, Ross Flaute and Kyle Flaute; two sisters; his father and mother-in-law; two sisters-in-law.
Maureen L. Meiring, 12, of 108 E. Third St. in Minster, passed away at 5:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at her home following a 19-month illness. She was born on Sept. 7, 2000, in St. Marys, to Ken and Connie (Dahlinghaus) Meiring. They both survive in Minster.
She is also survived by sisters Maggie, 15, Gwen, 11, Corrine, 9, all at home; by her maternal grandparents. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents.
