Music Tops Charts For Rider

ST. MARYS — For senior Roughrider Mitchell Slemmons, the focus of Christmas vacation was band, band and more band.

Slemmons was a part of the group of students who went to Florida with the St. Marys All Brass Band.

“That was a lot of fun,” Slemmons said. “Both the performances went really well, even though it ended up raining at the Citrus Bowl Parade.”

The rain did not put a hitch in the band’s experience, Slemmons said.

Official To Keep An Eye On Water Levels

ST. MARYS —  A warm spell coupled with recent steady rains have local officials keeping an eye on county waterways.

The remnants of the late December snowstorm melted — and washed — away as a warm front moved into the region and with it unseasonable temperatures. The melting snow and rain have caused water levels rivers and tributaries to begin climb.

MINSTER — Faster than a speeding football, peppier than the most powerful opponent, inside the Wildcat suit is Nick Kemper, Super Fan, someone who could easily be called the most-spirited Wildcat represented at sports games.

In his day-to-day life, the mascot of Minster High School is an unassuming, bubbly band member who could easily be called the Clark Kent of the high school world.

Randy W. McCollister, 40

January 11, 2013

Randy W. McCollister, 40, of Mendon, died at 1:46 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, of natural causes.

He was born on March 17, 1972, in Nelsonville, to his parents  Raymond (Mary)McCollister of St. Marys and Betty (Randy) Richmond of Athens.

Girls Basketball: Rangers outlast Marion Local in double OT behind Horstman's 31 points

NEW KNOXVILLE — Whenever the breaks go your way you have to take advantage of them and Thursday night the New Knoxville Rangers girls basketball team did just that in the second overtime. A key steal allowed defending MAC player of the year Haley Horstman to go in and get fouled and sink two free throws to break things the  Rangers way in a  56-49 victory over the Marion Local Flyers in a MAC contest played at the Barn in New Knoxville.

Girls Basketball: Minster holds DSJ to 20 points in MAC win

MINSTER — The Minster Wildcats hosted the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays in a Midwest Athletic Conference matchup Thursday night. Minster came out strong defensively in the first half and held the Blue Jays to seven first half points.

Minster stepped up the defensive pressure and shots started to fall for the home team as they captured a 31-20 victory.

Girls Basketball: Bath rolls past Roughriders

BATH TOWNSHIP — The Bath girls basketball team appeared plenty motivated after suffering a 19-point loss at Ottoville on Saturday.

The Wildkittens  made  half their shots, Alyssa Manley scored a game-high 19 points and Bath rolled to a 69-21 win over St. Marys on Thursday night.

Discounts Return To GLSM

ST. MARYS — Visitors to Grand Lake St. Marys State Park will once again be able to take advantage of deep discounts this year.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources announced it plans to continue to offer a 50 percent discount on camping and dock fees for 2013. Getaway rentals will be discounted 25 percent and the special prices will be in effect from April 1 to Oct. 31 — excluding May 24-26, June 30 to July 6, Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, Sept. 20-22 and Oct. 4-6.

Student Admits To Threat

WAPAKONETA — A sixth-grade Wapakoneta City Schools student confessed to writing a note on a school desk which led to the evacuation Thursday of Wapakoneta Middle School.

Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock said through an officer’s investigation a student of interest was identified and interviewed. During the interview, an 11-year-old girl confessed to leaving the note.
