ST. MARYS — Before the emergence of the “man cave,” there were barbershops, places where men gathered to socialize, talk sports and women, and tell jokes.
December 30th
Clifford E. Thatcher, 56, of New Bremen, died at 3 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at his residence.
He was born on Feb. 6, 1956, in Van Wert. He was the son of Smilie “Bud” and Irene (Schuller) Thatcher. His mother survives in Rockford.
On Aug. 18, 1979, he married Karen A. Heitkamp who survives near New Bremen.
William H. Garrett, 68, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born on Aug. 15, 1944, in Columbus, to Howard R. and Dorothy L. (Webb) Garrett, who preceded him in death.
On Dec. 31, 1978, he married Lora L. Winget, and she survives in Wapakoneta.
He is also survived by five children; Julie Smith, Penny Young, William II (Rachel) Garrett, Angel (Adam) Stahler, and Shaun (Bethany) Garrett; 10 grandchildren; and three sisters, Delores Truman, Phyllis Talley, and Faye Bossert.
Jennifer Anne (Westbay) Helberg, 40, died on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Ala.
She was born on May 21, 1972, to the Rev. Michael V. and Nancy L. Westbay, who survive in Wapakoneta.
On Aug. 29, 2000, she married Joseph Helberg, who survives. Jennifer, her husband and daughter, Rylie Gwen, 10, moved to Helena, Ala., in the summer of 2011.

NEW BREMEN – The New Bremen Cardinals matched Fort Loramie's physicality and used a big third quarter to defeat the Redskins, 74-62, on Saturday at New Bremen.
“It was a real physical game,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “I was real pleased with how physical we were."
Carson Manger led the Cardinals in scoring with 24 points, while Luke Schwieterman added 18 points, Ben Homan had 14 points and nine rebounds and Justin Heitkamp had 12 points and eight rebounds.

ST. MARYS — The New Knoxville Rangers entered their game at St. Marys giving up the second most points per game among Midwest Athletic Conference teams.
New Knoxville head coach Kort Fledderjohann thinks that could be changing if Friday night’s defensive effort was any indication.
The Rangers limited one of the area’s best scorers and held a team under 50 points for the second straight game in a 58-49 win over St. Marys at Memorial High School on Friday.
ST. MARYS — According to AAA, alcohol contributed to 12,880 crashes and 368 deaths on Ohio’s roads in 2011.
More alcohol-related crashes occurred in December than any other month. New Year’s proved to be dangerous, with 64 alcohol-related crashes on Dec. 31, 2011, and 103 alcohol-related crashes on Jan. 1.
According to a December 2012 report by the National Transportation Safety Board, approximately 60 percent of wrong-way crashes are related to alcohol consumption.
ST. MARYS — A fire destroyed a home on Pershing Drive, just west of St. Marys, Friday morning.
At approximately 3:20 a.m., members of the St. Marys Township Fire Department received a phone call reporting a blaze at 250 Pershing Drive. When firefighters arrived, they found the garage engulfed in flames and the fire had spread into the rest of the residence.
ST. MARYS — In a word, 18-year-old Makayla Buehler is ambitious.
Her four years at St. Marys Memorial High School have been jam-packed with sports and activities. She is a member of both the volleyball and track teams, and of Student Council, FCA and Girl Talk.
Buehler is a defensive specialist in volleyball, and runs the 100 and 200-meter dashes in track. She also does the relay for both of those races.
