“Leader Look Back,” is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week’s edition examines stories from March 5 to March 11, 1937, 1962 and 1987.

75 years ago: Memorial High School lost to Wapakoneta 35-15 in a district tournament game in Kenton. Four seniors — Norman Arnett, Ed Yoder, Otto Glass and Warren Broyles — were given the chance to start for the Riders.

Expo Highlights Businesses

ST. MARYS — Approximately 20 local businesses took part in the first-ever business expo on Saturday, sponsored by a fledgling business organization in St. Marys.

The St. Marys Community Partnership took over the Union Hall on South Street for the St. Marys Business Expo. The event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., served as a way to pair local businesses with residents throughout the community.

Pit Bulls Attack Celina Man

CELINA — The Celina Police responded to a call of a subject being attacked by a pit bull at 4:22 p.m. Friday.

Officers arrived to find the victim was in a basement of a home at 214 Elm St. The attack was ongoing as officers arrived and the victim was pinned in the far corner of the basement by the dogs involved.One of the dogs was hanging on his left leg and he could not reach the basement stairs.

Marie M. Arnett, 90

March 12, 2012

Marie M. Arnett, 90, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was born on May 6, 1921, in Fryburg, the daughter of John and Mary (Reier) Roth, and they preceded her in death.

On Oct. 26, 1944, she married Frederick “Fritz” Arnett, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1992.

Pearl Walker, 82

Pearl Walker, 82, formerly of 319 S. Beech St., St. Marys, died at 8:40 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012, at Golden Living Center – Valley.

She was born on April 26, 1927, in Pruden, Tenn., to Elvin and Mary (Adkins) Orick, and they preceded her in death.

She is survived by a brother, Verlin (Janie) Orick of St. Marys; a sister, Evelyn (Hewell) Teague of St. Marys; two brothers-in-law, Donald Schell of St. Marys and Clay Beagle of St. Marys; numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen K. Schemmel, 98

March 12, 2012

Helen K. Schemmel, 98, formerly of New Bremen, and of Eagle Drive, Minster, died at 2 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Minster.

She was born on July 27, 1913, in Sidney, to Albert and Zita (Guissinger) Kloeppel, and they preceded her in death.

On Nov. 19, 1930, in Sidney, she married William M. Schemmel, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1991.

Annual Bowling Event Set To Return

ST. MARYS — A local organization pairing mentors and children is hosting its annual fundraiser next week.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer, Auglaize and Van Wert Counties is putting on its annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake event next week.

“It is the 16th at 7 p.m.,” Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer, Auglaize and Van Wert Counties Executive Director Abby Balster said. “Bowling begins at 7 p.m.”

Flamingoes Invade Region

NEW BREMEN — Flocks of flamingos have taken over the yards of area residents who are helping raise money for a local charity.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer, Auglaize and Van Wert counties has teamed up with Preferred Insurance Center for a fundraiser that is sending pink flamingos to the yards of New Bremen and St. Marys residents.

Driver Found Guilty In Death

CELINA — A Korean man was found guilty of causing an accident that claimed the life of a Minster girl in October.

During a change-of-plea hearing in Mercer County Common Pleas Court Friday afternoon, Jinghao Xu, 50, pleaded no contest to one count of vehicular homicide, a fourth-degree felony. The charge stems from an Oct. 15 collision at the intersection of Ohio 119 and U.S. 127 in Granville Township. Aubrey L. Bruns, 3, of Minster, died from injuries suffered in the collision.
