The deadline for youth baseball sign-up in St. Marys is quickly approaching.

Players wishing to sign up for Tee Ball, Machine Pitch, Minor League, Major League or Pony League need to be signed up by Saturday, March 31.

There are three ways to sign up for the leagues. Sign-up is available online at http://smbb.clubspaces.com , by phone at 419-305-6552 or in person at Albert Sports Goods on Spring Street.

Board Talks Next Step

NEW BREMEN — After a decisive 61 percent of voters rejected the potential building project last week, New Bremen Board of Education members discussed at their regular meeting Wednesday what the next step should be.

Interim Superintendent John Basinger said he was surprised to see a large number of residents vote against the levy.

E. Lucille (Bushong) Eichhorn, 86

March 14, 2012

E. Lucille (Bushong) Eichhorn, 86, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:41 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Otterbein-Cridersville.

She was born on July 27, 1925, in Williamstown, to Marion U. and M. Marie (Steinman) Bushong, who preceded her in death.  

In 1964, she married C. Gaylord Eichhorn, and he preceded her in death in 1967.  

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Gladys Whitmer of Kettering; a brother; several nieces, nephews and steprelatives.

She was preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters.

Tina M. Phlipot, 50

Tina M. Phlipot, 50, of 801 Manier Ave., Piqua, died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Minster.

She was born on March 19, 1961, in Lima, to John and Sandra (Reineke) Eilerman, and they survive her in Minster.

Village To Look At Dog Park

NEW BREMEN — A local village is looking for its residents’ opinions on whether to add a dog park to its lands.

“We’ve gotten some responses, but we’d like to get more,” Councilor Denny Burnell said.

He noted he and fellow Councilor John Schwartz have a few sites they are thinking about in the village to put a possible dog park, but they are hoping to hear what their fellow residents think about the proposal.

Appeal Arguments Heard

LIMA — Attorneys from both sides argued their cases in front of judges from the Third District Court of Appeals regarding the murder conviction of a St. Marys man last year.

In November, Gordon W. Diggle III filed an appeal in his conviction on murder, felonious assault and aggravated robbery charges. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in the beating death of Steven Casad on Sept. 8, 2010.

Committee Talks Policies

ST. MARYS — Local board members will be discussing new policy changes at their Wednesday meeting after committee members reviewed policies.

During a meeting of the St. Marys Board of Education Policy, Programs and Planning Committee Monday afternoon, committee members went through proposed policy changes and recommended the full board approve the changes during its regular meeting Wednesday evening.

One of the changes suggested was to allow students who participate in two seasons of marching band and/or and athletics to get credit for physical education.

Alum To Start Soon

ST. MARYS — State officials on Monday announced plans to go ahead with a lakewide alum application in the coming weeks.

"The timeline is going to be early April," Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director Jim Zehringer told The Evening Leader. "I know we are going to be quite a bit ahead of last year's schedule. We are going to have a full lake treatment and we are excited about getting started."
