ST. MARYS — With a $1,000 prize on the line, a group of Memorial High School students are showcasing the pride of the St. Marys community in a spirit video they created for Alltel’s second annual Yards 4 Youth competition.

The students in Andrew Klosterman’s Memorial Television class prepared the Yards 4 Youth video, focusing on how St. Marys shows its school pride.

GIRLS SOCCER: Celina edges St. Marys, 1-0

CELINA — The heated St. Marys-Celina girls soccer rivalry produced a winner for the first time since 2009.

Taylor Guingrich’s early long strike held up the rest of the game, giving Celina a 1-0 win over St. Marys on Thursday night after the two rivals played to 1-1 ties in both 2011 and 2010.

VOLLEYBALL: New Knoxville rallies from 2-0 deficit to defeat New Bremen

NEW KNOXVILLE — It took some doing for the New Knoxville Ranger volleyball team to stay undefeated in the MAC, but they did it. The Rangers trailed New Bremen 2-0, but came back to defeat he Cardinals 14-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-8 and 15-8 in a MAC contest played at New Knoxville.

Thursday Round-Up: Rider volleyball wins in three over Bath

VOLLEYBALL

ST. MARYS 3, BATH 0: The St. Marys volleyball team defeated Bath in three games, 25-16, 27-25, 25-18, on Thursday at Memorial High School. Reagan Aller led the Roughriders with eight kills. Erika Angstmann had 11 digs. Rachel Meier had 14 assists for St. Marys. St. Marys improved to 4-8 and 2-1 in the Western Buckeye League.

Library OKs Projects

ST. MARYS — A list of building and grounds improvements is in the works for the St. Marys Community Public Library, as the Board of Trustees approved a handful of recommendations from the library’s building committee at their meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Update: Dogs Seized From Home

September 14, 2012

FORT RECOVERY — Deputies seized close to 20 dogs and found between 150 to 200 animals spread across a rural Mercer County property on Wednesday.

While executing a search warrant at 972 State Route 49, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said deputies discovered the dogs living in poor conditions throughout the property. The animals were found living in several out-buildings and campers, as well as the main residence on the property.

Marcella “Sally” M. Lefeld, 97

Marcella “Sally” M. Lefeld, 97, of Coldwater, died on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at Briarwood Village in Coldwater.

She was born on Feb. 26, 1915, in Philothea, to Frank and Anna (Pleiman) Hemmelgarn, and they preceded her in death.

On Sept. 5, 1936, in Philothea, she married Joseph H. Lefeld, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1990.

Vernon A. Hartings, 80

September 14, 2012

Vernon A. Hartings, 80, of 7351 Ohio 119, St. Rose, died at 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on Feb. 28, 1932, in St. Rose, to John and Bernadine (Leugers) Hartings, and they preceded him in death.

On Sept. 5, 1953, he married Alberta Ranly, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 1982. On Nov. 4, 1989, he married Arlene Wolaver, and she survives in St. Rose. 

Calvin L. Slattery, 83

September 14, 2012

Calvin L. Slattery, 83, of New Bremen, died at 2:38 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.  

He was born on Feb. 27, 1929, in Wapakoneta, the son of Eugene and Lillia (Weifenbach) Slattery, and they preceded him in death.

On July 10, 1953, he married Esther M. Fogt, and she preceded him in death on March 22, 2001.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2002

The St. Marys Roughriders logged their second Western Buckeye League victory in a row with a tight, 14-7 win over the Lima Shawnee Indians. 

Following a scoreless first quarter, the ‘Riders got on the board in the second period when running back Justin Nagel scored on a 40-yard run, his first of both touchdowns in the evening.
