M. Mildred Noonan, 93

September 18, 2012

M. Mildred Noonan, 93, of St. Marys, died on Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home in Spencerville.

 A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Marys.

 Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.

 A complete obituary will appear in the next edition of this newspaper.

JoAnne Griggs, 87

JoAnne Griggs, 87, of Mendon, died on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

She was born on Aug. 6, 1925, in Mercer County, to Darst and Florence (Proffitt) Dilbone, and they preceded her in death.

On May 25, 1946, she married John D. “Jake” Griggs, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 7, 2011.

She is survived by a brother; a sister-in-law; many nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers; a sister.

Master Sgt. Larry L. Cathcart, 60

Master Sgt. Larry L. Cathcart, 60, USAF (ret.), of 1202 Hawthorne St., St. Marys, died at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on Nov. 24, 1951, in Celina, to James and Wilma (Spaulding) Cathcart, and his father preceded him in death. His mother survives him in St. Marys.

On Aug. 29, 1971, in St. Marys, he married Carol J. Peterman, and she survives.

He is also survived by a brother, Steve Cathcart of Fort Wayne, Ind.; his nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Leona Peterman of St. Marys.

Students Model Outfits

ST. MARYS — Even with New York Fashion Week wrapping up last Friday, local eighth-grade girls were treated to their own runway show Monday morning.

As part of the “Modest is Hottest” fashion show, seven eighth-grade girls modeled two outfits for their peers to showcase outfits that are school appropriate and also appropriate for the students’ upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. — including appropriate dresses to wear during the D.C. dance.

Electric Study Recommended

ST. MARYS — St. Marys City Councilors next week will vote on a measure that, if approved, would authorize a comprehensive study of the city’s electrical system.

During Monday night’s electric/communications meeting, committee members moved to recommend councilors authorize a study to be conducted by Spectrum Engineering that would examine the city’s electrical system and suggest areas for improvement. Safety-Service Director Jason Little said he opted to suggest Spectrum Engineering following proposals from three firms and conversations with AMP.

WEEKEND ROUND-UP: Trio of area golfers fire 76s at Moeller Memorial

CELINA — Van Wert won the Jordan Moeller Memorial by 10 strokes on Saturday at the Mercer County Elks course, while a quartet of area teams finished in the top eight. New Bremen took fourth with a 338 team score, Celina finished fifth with a 340, Minster was sixth with a 340 and St. Marys finished eighth with a 347. New Knoxville finished 16th with a 418.

OTTAWA — New Knoxville and St. Marys' cross country teams competed at the Ottawa-Glandorf Blue and Gold Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

The New Knoxville boys scored 247 points for eighth in the Gold Division standings. St. Henry won with 46 points and Spencerville was ninth with 262 points. New Knoxville’s Isaac Kuntz finished third overall with a 16:41.

The St. Marys boys cross country team finished sixth in the Blue Division standings with 175 points.Nick Durkee led St. Marys with a 12th-place finish and a 17:04 time.

Film Crew To Visit St. Marys

ST. MARYS — A film crew for a television show airing on the Discovery Channel will be in St. Marys on Friday.

Earlier this year, the city of St. Marys entered into an agreement to appear on “Today in America” — which is hosted by Terry Bradshaw. The program features communities across the country and highlights attractions, businesses and recreational opportunities.

WAPAKONETA — After a decade of talking, consulting, planning and restoring, a historical county building is finally complete.

Local and state officials opened the Auglaize County Courthouse during a special Auglaize County Rededication ceremony held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday with approximately 450-500 people in attendance for the ribbon cutting and dedication of the newly renovated building.

State Sen. Cliff Hite, R-Findlay, summed it up by saying that history has come alive during his speech, focusing on a history teacher and legislature’s perspective.

Joseph Hugo Schaaf, 83

Joseph Hugo Schaaf, 83, of 1730 Celina Road, St. Marys, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at St. Marys Living Center.

He was born on Sept. 3, 1929, in St. Marys, to Hugo and Viola (Mann) Schaaf, and they preceded him in death.

On Aug. 15, 1953, in Brooklyn, Mich., he married Laura Mae “Smiley” King, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 4, 1980.
