ST. MARYS — Recently, Army veterans from the area reunited for the first time in seven years after fighting together in Baghdad — and for some, it was their first time being able to talk about their experience overseas.
Dorothea L. Teeters, 88, of Celina, formerly of Quincy, died at 12:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born on Nov. 24, 1923, in Shelby County, to Oscar and Olive (Kiser) Shroyer, and they preceded her in death.
She was married to Patrick Teeters, and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children, Sharon (Paul) Palanzo of Danbury, Conn., and Steve (Pam) Schwartz of Fort Loramie; a stepson, Kevin (Karen) Teeters of Celina; a sister; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Flora Zecca Ziskind, lovingly known as “Nanny,” 86, peacefully passed away on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at her residence in New Knoxville.
She was born on Feb. 26, 1926, in Cerlano, Italy, to Sebastiono and Maria (Liguori) Zecca, and they preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Lana (Stephen) Uhlik of New Knoxville and Patricia Koutsoupis of New York; a brother, Serge (Angie) Zecca of Larchmont, N.Y.; a sister, Jeanette (Ross) Fulco of Scarsdale, N.Y.; two granddaughters.
Evelyn L. Craven, 70, of Celina, died at 2:02 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at the Ohio State Medical Center.
She was born on Nov. 22, 1941, in Auglaize County, to Harry Max and Mary Jane Rogers Sheaks, and they preceded her in death.
She is survived by a son, Wayne W. Whited of Miamisburg; two daughters, Terri L. Fisher and Shari A. Whited, both of Celina; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister.
She was preceded in death by a sister; a brother.

ST. MARYS — As news of Neil Armstrong’s death circulated the globe on Saturday, local residents remembered the legacy of the first man to walk on the moon.
“I knew him through Scouting,” local historian George Neargarder told The Evening Leader. “I was on the board of review for his Eagle Scout award. I also knew his dad, too.”
WAPAKONETA — Neil Armstrong, “a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job” when he was the first man to “take one small for a man” and “one giant leap for mankind,” died Saturday following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.

ST. MARYS — Sidney waited two seasons to celebrate a victory , so an extra minute of patience needed before kicking an overtime game-winner didn’t faze head coach Adam Doenges and his Yellow Jackets.
The St. Marys Roughriders were simply left kicking themselves for opportunities missed in the 2012 season opener.
Sidney senior kicker Andre Spillers booted a 30-yard field goal in overtime to snap Sidney’s 20-game losing streak and give the Yellow Jackets a 10-7 overtime win over St. Marys at Skip Baughman Stadium on Friday night.
COVINGTON — Running was the name of the game for the Covington Buccaneers Friday night in the opening game of the 2012 football season against the New Bremen Cardinals.
Junior A. J. Quellette did the running for the Buccaneers with 27 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns as Covington defeated New Bremen, 27-7.
