ST. MARYS — Officials from FEMA left Auglaize County Friday to continue assessment trips in the wake of the June 29 wind event that swept across the state.
MINSTER — Students at Minster Elementary School will soon have a new playground to enjoy as Phase I of Minster’s playground project is set to be completed next month.
Elementary Principal Leanne Keller said the need for a new playground spurred from the building consolidation.
“The most immediate need and the first goal was to install playground equipment for younger students,” Keller told The Evening Leader. “With the consolidation, this building had been a four through eight building and is now a K through six building.”
ST. MARYS — A member of a local police department is trading one uniform for another as part of his service to his country.
St. Marys Police Sgt. Ted Copeland completed his last day of work on Wednesday for the city as he is set to deploy to Afghanistan with his unit as part of the U.S. Army Reserves. Copeland, who has been with the police department since 1993, will be on his fourth deployment since becoming a police officer.
Joan Groff, 92, formerly of North Star, died on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012 at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville.
She was born on Jan. 5, 1920, in North Star, to Leo and Zita (Grilliot) Stammen, and they preceded her in death.
On May 17, 1941, she married Val Groff, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 1995.
Clyde M. Hirn, 73, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, surrounded by family and friends.
Mr. Hirn was born on Dec. 5, 1938, in Mendon, to Ernest and Inez Hirn, and they preceded him in death.
ST. MARYS — Officials with the United Steelworkers Union and Veyance Technologies reached a tentative agreement on a four-year deal after three months of negotiations.
In a news release, the USW announced the tentative agreement would cover 1,000 Veyance Technologies employees in St. Marys, Lincoln, Neb., Sun Prairie, Wis., and Marysville. The pact would run through July 2016.
WAPAKONETA — Between sketching out diagrams of a chicken in their notebook to taking notes from a friend on a dairy cow, the top showmen at the Auglaize County Fair learned how to show other animals in less than a week.
The Showman of Showmen Sweepstakes yielded its typical eight contestants competing for the title of top showman at the fair.
CELINA — Mercer Savings Bank (MSB) and The Peoples Bank Co. (PBC) jointly announced today the two banks have entered into a purchase and assumption agreement to transfer accounts, real estate and other assets from MSB’s branches in St. Marys and Coldwater to PBC. Under the terms of the agreement, The Peoples Bank Co. will assume most of the deposits and purchase the real estate and certain assets of the St. Marys and Coldwater offices. Mercer Savings Bank will retain all loans from both offices.

ST. MARYS — According to a United Steelworkers news release, its union agreed to a tentative four-year deal with Veyance Technologies. The deal includes the St. Marys facility and would run through the end of July 2016.
Following a series of informational meetings, union members will vote to ratify the pact. The contract covers more than 1,000 Veyance employees in other facilities including Lincoln, Neb., Marysville and Sun Prairie, Wis.
