ST. MARYS — For 17-year-old Kevin Dammeyer, water skiing is in his blood.
During his summers, the son of Carl and Denise Dammeyer competes in water skiing competitions.
“This summer, I did regionals and nationals,” he said. “Regionals was in Minnesota, and nationals was in Florida.”
He noted his parents enjoy water skiing, and he picked up the hobby when he was five.
“My dad and my mom water ski, and I just wanted to do it,” he said.
ST. MARYS — As the calendar changes to September, a local county official says residents should keep the threat of severe weather in mind during fall.
September is Preparedness Month — a campaign sponsored by FEMA that looks to make residents cognizant of severe weather and disasters and how to plan accordingly for the events. Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson said fall has become an active weather season for Auglaize County.
ST. MARYS — After pounding the Gulf Coast earlier this week, the remnants of Hurricane Isaac are expected to reach Auglaize County later today.
“We’ve been looking at it and studying this thing all week,” Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson told The Evening Leader. “There are so many different models and scenarios right now.”
ST. MARYS — Purses of a variety of colors, shapes and sizes covered several tables in downtown St. Marys Friday morning for a sale to benefit a county organization.
The Family Life Center of Auglaize County Purse Sale opened on Friday morning and ran through 3 p.m. The sale continues from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in front on the Family Life Center of Auglaize County’s office at 150 E. Spring St., St. Marys. Purses are being sold from 50 cents to $3. Shoppers may also purchase three 50 cent purses for $1.
Marcella E. “Sally” Pleiman, 85, of 13420 Renee Drive, McCartyville, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Minster.
She was born on March 20, 1927, in Minster, to the late Henry and Dorothy (Winner) Wuebker. She married Jerome A. Pleiman on April 14, 1949, in Minster. He preceded her in death on April 10, 2002.
Dennis F. Lammers, 72, of New Knoxville, passed away suddenly at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at his residence.
He was born on Oct. 19, 1939, near New Knoxville. He was the son of Silas and Lola (Howe) Lammers. On Sept. 10, 1966, he married Marlene Knost, and she survives near New Knoxville.
Betty Fisher, 84, formerly of 309 Augustus St., St. Marys, died at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at the St. Marys Living Center.
She was born on Jan. 16, 1928, in St. Marys, the daughter of William and Nora (Ankerman) Thielk. She married John E. Fisher on May 18, 1954, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 1985.
She is survived by her sister, Arlene (Richard) Hoverman of Spencerville; a stepdaughter, Connie Birdyshaw of Winter Garden, Fla.; a stepgrandson, Jason LaPenta of Florida; by two nieces, Diann (Paul) Dunlap of Spencerville, Joann Pitts of Lima.
Robert E. Hunter, 89, formerly of 800 Motz St., St. Marys, died at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.
He was born on March 29, 1923, in St. Marys, the son of Robert and Vivian (Clark) Hunter. He married Charleen Fark on April 14, 1945, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 2004.
Patricia A. Kemp, 79, of DeTour Village, Mich., passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Cedar Cove in Cedarville, Mich.
She was born on Dec. 24, 1932.
Pat grew up in Jackson, Mich., and attended Albion College, where she earned her first bachelor’s degree.
She married Barrett Kemp, who survives in St. Marys, in June 1956.
