50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
This week in 1962, the St. Marys Lakers finally hung a loss on the Coldwater Cubs in men’s baseball action, when they edged them 7-6 in a non-league encounter in Coldwater.
Coldwater had beaten the Lakers in their three straight previous meetings through the summer of 1962. Despite missing several of their offensive cogs, the Lakers managed 15 hits in the victory, led by Dick Hollman and Fred Dray, who knocked three base hits apiece.
Jamie Lynn Rammel, 27, of Celina, died on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater.
She was born on Dec. 10, 1984, in Coldwater, to Richard “Ralf” Rammel and Dona J. (Goodwin) Kaler, and her father survives in Celina. Her mother and stepfather, Paul Kaler, survive in Camp Hill, Pa.
She is also survived by her life partner, Ian Hemmelgarn of Celina; a son, Brandon Hemmelgarn of Celina; two daughters, Lillian Hemmelgarn of Celina and Taylor Hemmelgarn of Celina; two brothers; a sister; four nieces and nephews.
Rex Laffin, 60, formerly of St. Marys, died on Saturday, July 14, 2012, in Naples, Fla.
He was born on Nov. 1, 1951, in Celina, to Orville and Maxine (Goodwin) Laffin, and they preceded him in death.
He is survived by a daughter, Kelly (Dave) Kiefer of St. Marys; a son, Erik Laffin of St. Marys; four grandchildren; five siblings, Connie (Harold) Nance of Cincinnati, Bill (Beverly) Laffin of Wapakoneta, Karen (Billy) Smith of Naples, Fla., Rebecca Matthews of Naples, Fla., and Kim Laffin of Lima; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
CELINA — Area residents can enjoy nine hours of music this weekend while helping contribute to next year’s Governor’s Cup Regatta.
After having to cancel this year’s race because of low lake levels, regatta organizers put together a music festival to raise money for next year’s event. The Governor’s Cup Regatta Musicfest will kick off at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lake Shore Park in Celina.
ST. MARYS — With local children heading back to school on Wednesday, a local official is reminding residents and students of the proper bus safety protocols.
St. Marys City Schools Transportation Supervisor Dan Grothause noted the proper behavior students should have while riding the school bus and reminded residents of the rules for stopping for a stopped school bus.
