GLSCL Baseball: Timm's homer snaps Mariners' skid

CELINA — The Lexington Hustlers grabbed a lead with five runs in the top of the fifth inning on Saturday.

Grand Lake fought back with four runs of its own, including a game-winning home run.

Michael Timm’s two-run homer proved to be the difference as the Mariners ended a three-game losing streak with a 7-5 seven-inning victory over the Hustlers at Jim Hoess Field.

2 Killed In Mercer County Crash

ST. HENRY - Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reported this morning that deputies are investigating the seventh fatal traffic crash of 2012 in Mercer County. This crash resulted in two fatalities bringing the total deaths because of crashes to 12.

Growing Garden

CELINA — A local garden has netted approximately 170 pounds of fruits and vegetables that have been given to area food pantries.

This is the first year for the Wright State University Lake Campus Community Garden, an all-volunteer operated garden located on campus.

Program Pairs Dogs, Veterans

CELINA — Though Sandra Bohle has owned dogs throughout her life, Abby, a young, rambunctious lab/grayhound mix, proved to be particularly challenging, but Bohle was determined to not give up on the dog.

“From the minute I saw this dog’s little face, I fell in love with her,” Bohle said. “I just felt from the very beginning that she played an important role, but I didn’t know what it would be. I just kept thinking and hearing it in my head, ‘For the love of Abby, for the love of Abby.’”

Scam Hits St. Marys

ST. MARYS — A local resident was recently the target of a scam that involved a person claiming to be from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

Lisa Miller told The Evening Leader one of her friends received a phone call from a person who claimed to be from the attorney general’s office. The caller indicated there was an outstanding balanced owed — approximately $500 — and if he did not receive payment, an arrest warrant would be activated.

ACME Baseball: Minster sets up rematch with Wapak

MINSTER — Jay Eilerman and the Minster ACME baseball team did almost everything needed to move on in the district tournament in just the first inning.

Eilerman threw a no-hop strike from centerfield 275 feet away  to a spot near the plate  to gun down a Fort Loramie baserunner, and he then doubled and tripled in the first inning to spearhead a seven-run top of the first for Minster.

The Wildcats’ pitching took it from there in Minster’s 7-3 win over Fort Loramie on Thursday night at Hanover Street Park.

Dogs, Owners To Hit Outdoors

NEW BREMEN — Area residents and their furry companions have the opportunity to get out for a night of exercising and socializing next week with the area’s first Dogs Night Out.

Dogs Night Out will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kuenning-Dicke Natural Area, off Lock Two Road, just north of New Bremen. Mile Creek Animal Hospital Veterinarian Leslie Winner said the event has two goals.

Man Indicted In Hoax

CELINA — An Indiana man is being held on a $50,000 cash bond in connection with a false report made through Mercer County 911 and false information he allegedly provided to law enforcement agencies during the emergency response to that false report last month.  

According to a news release issued by the Celina Police Department, on June 6, a call to Mercer County 911 indicated a subject had laid a motionless child on the concrete pad by the lighthouse that is located on the northwest corner of Grand Lake St. Marys in Celina.  

City To Appear On TV Show

ST. MARYS — Work recently started on a production that will give St. Marys some national exposure.

Officials from “Today in America,” a show that is aired on the Discovery Channel, contacted officials from the city of St. Marys earlier this year regarding the possibility of the city being featured on one of its programs. Development Manager Susan Crotty said the show would showcase the city and what it has to offer.
