ST. MARYS — When he gave his daughter up for adoption, Matt Paul, a college student in Arizona at the time, knew it was what was best for her.
“I had no future yet,” he said. “I was still in college, I had a part-time job, and her mother was the same that I was.”
Having been raised by a loving adoptive family himself, Paul said his positive experience helped him come to the decision.
“I think if I would not have gone through it, I might not have thought about it, but I had a great childhood,” he said.
Lester Young, 74, of Celina, died at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the Laurels of Shane Hill in Rockford.
He was born on May 11, 1938, in Jennings County, Ind., to Ernest Young and Mable Simmons, and they preceded him in death.
On Dec. 29, 1988, he married Norma Combs, and she survives.
He is also survived by a son, Thomas Leighty of Savanna, Ga.; a daughter, Melissa (Bob) Lacey of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother; two sisters; two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was born on Nov. 17, 1924, in Celina, to Herbert and Ruth (Desch) Vander Horst, and they preceded him in death.
On June 9, 1957, he married Bernice “Ben” Schmitz, and she preceded him in death on July 7.
Mary M. Simon, 92, of Versailles, passed away at 5:16 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012.
She was born on Feb. 13, 1920, in Piqua, to Louis and Zelma (Francis) Peltier, and they preceded her in death.
Carol J. Hagen, 91, of Celina, died at 10:31 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Gardens in Celina.
She was born on Jan. 24, 1921, in Northport, Mich., to Fred Baumberger and Daisy Nelson, and they preceded her in death.
On Oct. 11, 1942, she married John “Frank” Hagen, and he preceded her in death on April 6, 2009.

Forty years and more than $600,000 donated to St. Marys Memorial athletic programs later, the group kicked off its fall 2012 events, which include teaming up with St. Marys Tailgate for Cancer to bring two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin to the city.
Griffin will appear at Buffalo Wild Wings in St. Marys on Thursday, Aug. 23, in a fundraiser for the Rider Rooters.
NEW BREMEN — The 91st annual New Bremen Firemen’s Picnic will return to Crown Pavilion on Saturday, with a lineup of activities that offers something for everyone.
“We’ve tried to structure the picnic and the day to provide something for all ages to come out and to enjoy what we’ve got to offer as far as activities,” Jeff Utz, of the New Bremen-German Township Fire Department, said. “We try to make it fun for everybody.”
Rebecca Sue Hagaman, 44, of Celina, died on Monday, July 23, 2012.
She was born on April 17, 1968, in St. Marys, to James and Sharon (Morgan) Hagaman, and her father preceded her in death. Her mother, Sharon Carl, survives in Wapakoneta.
She is survived by four children, Michael and Randy Bordeaux and Jason and Jodi Moon, all of Michigan; five siblings; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held for the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Association of Mercer County.
George A. Cecere, 85, of Wapakoneta, died at 12:06 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima. Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta, where the family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
