Virginia V. Fry, 93

June 4, 2012

Virginia V. Fry, 93, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:15 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at the Wapakoneta Manor.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1918, in Logan Township, Auglaize County, the daughter of William and Blanche (McCord) Cook, and they preceded her in death.

On June 20, 1940, she married Robert E. Fry, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 2008.  

Irma L. Feldman, 100

Irma L. Feldman, 100, 31 W. Fifth St., Minster, died at 3:05 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Hospice of Dayton Inpatient Unit.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1912, in Fort Loramie, to Christopher and Caroline (Stueve) Boerger, and they preceded her in death.

In 1937, she married Russell Woehrmyer, and he preceded her in death in 1944. In 1948, she married her second husband, Henry Feldman, and he preceded her in death in 1983.

Fish Biting At GLSM

CELINA — The fish are biting at Grand Lake St. Marys.

During Saturday’s Lake Improvement Association meeting, Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Manager Brian Miller told members anglers along the lake are hauling in a wide variety — and number — of fish. Bass, catfish, crappie and carp are among the species local visitors are catching in the lake.

Deputies Probe Industrial Accident

CELINA — Deputies from Mercer County are investigating an industrial accident that claimed the life of a Rockford man on Saturday.

In a news release issued by Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey, at 3:33 p.m. Saturday, deputies received a call on Erastus-Durbin Road approximately one-half mile south of Ohio 707, indicating that the wind had blown a metal culvert from a trailer and across a male who was attempting to unload it.

COLUMBUS — The celebration began at home plate and then found its way down the first base line in the form of Minster players leaping into a pile.

The Minster baseball team is king of the hill in Division IV again.

TRACK & FIELD: Minster boys 4-by-400 meter relay team captures Division III title

COLUMBUS — Derek Collins just couldn't help it.

The Minster senior broke into a grin as wide as the lead he had over the next closest competitor with 50 meters left to go on the final leg of the boys 4-by-400 meter relay team.

Minster's championship relay team could savor closing out the Division III state track and field meet with a victory even before the race was over.

COLUMBUS — Not every victory need be accompanied by a rise to the top of the podium at the state track meet.

Sometimes the consistency of a three-year run of excellence like the one Kayla Wuebker completed on Friday or the perseverance to get back to the state meet and excel after a disappointing hiatus like Wapakoneta’s Megan Hayzlett displayed are achievement enough.

BASEBALL: Minster to play for back-to-back state titles on Saturday night

COLUMBUS — The Minster baseball team’s line-up cranked out 14 hits and wallopped Tinora 12-2 in a Division IV state semifinal.

Minster (25-6) will now play for back-to-back state championships when the Wildcats square off for the Division IV crown with Cuyahoga Heights (25-4)on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Huntington Park.

“Leader Look Back” is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week’s edition examines stories from May 29 to June 4, 1937, 1962 and 1987.

75 years ago: Sheriff William Nieter and Police Chief G.A. Gestner patrolled roads north of St. Marys after receiving a tip members of the Brady gang were on their way to the city from Fort Wayne. The gang was responsible for a slew of bank robberies in the region and the lawmen threw up a temporary barricade north of the city.
