CELINA — Gov. John Kasich visited the area on Monday, stopping in at the Mercer County Republicans’ Reagan Day dinner at the Galleria and speaking on topics such as agriculture, manufacturing, job creation and education.
Sen. Keith Faber introduced Kasich, who thanked those in attendance, such as Jim Zehringer and Rep. Jim Buchy.
Virginia L. Strader, 85, of St. Marys, died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Laurels of Shane Hill in Rockford.
She was born on Oct. 18, 1927, in St. Marys, to John and Sarah (Moser) Jacobs, and they preceded her in death.
On Aug. 25, 1956, in St. Marys, she married Joseph M. Strader, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 2009.
Barbara A. Egbert, 74, of New Bremen, died at 12:05 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012, at her residence.
She was born on May 13, 1938, in Minster, the daughter of Steven and Ruby (Mackley) Oldiges.
On May 25, 1957, she married Alvin Egbert, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 16, 2003.
Jeanne A. Campbell, 56, of Wapakoneta, died at 3:23 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health Systems, Lima.
She was born on March 20, 1956, in St. Marys, to Lester and Leah (Settlage) Kruse, and her mother preceded her in death. Her father survives in New Knoxville.
On Aug. 28, 1976, she married Rodney Campbell, and he survives in Wapakoneta.
ST. MARYS — State officials pulled samples on Monday as part of testing at beaches along Grand Lake St. Marys.
Ohio Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Bethany McCorkle said officials were in the area taking samples to test for toxins ahead of Memorial Day weekend at Grand Lake St. Marys. The state has been routinely testing around the lake and added samples from the beaches this week.
"We'll have those results back on Thursday from the testing," McCorkle told The Evening Leader.
ST. MARYS — For the past three days, anglers from around the Midwest convened on Grand Lake St. Marys to participate in the second-ever “Get the Carp Outta Here” fishing tournament.
With the sunny weather, anglers were bringing in fish by the dozen.
“The numbers of people fishing are down, but we’re on pace to weigh in more fish,” co-organizer Dan Manning said on Sunday. “There are people from all around to do this — they’re professionals.”

He was born on May 21, 1923, in Celina, to Harry and Ocie (Fast) Meyer, and they preceded him in death.
In 1950, he married Aldyth Barber, and she survives him.
He is also survived by two daughters, Judith Clancy of Scottsdale, Ariz., Cynthia (Rick) Schlichting of New Providence, N.J.; a daughter-in-law; six grandchildren; a loyal friend.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jeff; his brother.
Jane P. Talan, 74, of Fairview Park, died on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at her residence.
She was born on July 15, 1937, in New Bremen, the daughter of Paul and Pauline (Vornholt) Gilberg.
On July 16, 1966, she married Albert Talan, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 2009.
Survivors include her sons, Albert P. Talan of Fairview Park and David M. (Angelica) Talan of Virginia; her grandchildren, Ella and Logan; her siblings, Alice (Duane) Hartwig, John (Joyce) Gilberg and Bill Gilberg, all of New Bremen, and Kathryn (Art) Beel of Westlake.
WAPAKONETA — Deputies and investigators with the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fatal farm accident Saturday east of St. Johns that claimed the life of a 56-year-old
At approximately 2:20 p.m., St. Johns Rescue Squad personnel and deputies from the sheriff’s office were dispatched to a residence east of St. Johns on U.S. 33, between the town of St. Johns and Ohio 65 in regard to a female found laying in a field and a driverless tractor still running in the field.
COLDWATER — The Cardiac Cats did it again.
Minster won its second straight district title with a 4-3 win over Crestview that — in typical Wildcat style this season — came down to a pulsepounding finish in the seventh inning.
“To be able to do this two years in a row, that’s something special,” Minster head coach Mike Wiss said.
