BASEBALL: Huber's homers lead Riders to win on Thursday night

MARIA STEIN — As the clean-up hitter in the St. Marys line-up, Michael Huber looked out at the flag in center field whipping directly out and saw the opportunity for a big day.

“As a hitter, I was definitely excited,” he said.

Huber said the wind helped him on the hill, too.

The Rider senior hit two home runs — including a seventh-inning grand slam — and pitched six strong innings in St. Marys’ 8-2 win over Marion Local on Thursday.

County Collects License Fees

"Leader Look Back," is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week's edition examines stories from May 1 to 7, 1937, 1962 and 1987.

75 years ago: Auglaize County collected $25,488 from license fees from a pool of $6.5 million collected by the state. Allen County received $62,352.

Slot machines were confiscated from Westerheide Restaurant and City Service Station in Minster.

Schools Host Believe In Yourself Week

NEW BREMEN — Cardinals will be participating in a slew of self-esteem building events next week as the schools kick off an annual weeklong event.

New Bremen Elementary and Middle schools will host Believe in Yourself Week starting Monday, a week that Middle School Principal Howard Overman noted was originally started to help raise the self-esteem of the students.

4 Locals Place In Art Contest

ST. MARYS — During an annual art contest that nabs participation throughout the United States and Canada, four local students placed in the competition.

As part of the 2012 Fraternal Order of Eagles Children’s Art Contest, Holy Rosary sixth-grade student Sam Young received first place in the sixth grade division of the contest.

“I drew a picture of a guy holding a flag,” Sam said. “He was a soldier.”

Sam said he used graphite pencil for the black and white drawing.

Alfrieda L. Wessel, 103

Alfrieda L. Wessel, 103, formerly of 307 N. Chestnut St., St. Marys, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2012, at Golden Living Center – Valley in St. Marys.

She was born on May 7, 1908, in St. Marys, to Henry and Emma (Wierwille) Quellhorst, and they preceded her in death.

On June 20, 1929, in Auglaize County, she married Earl “Heinie” Wessel, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 1980.

Flash Flood Warning Issued

AUGLAIZE COUNTY — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for eastern Auglaize County until 7 p.m. today. Radar indicated that thunderstorms had produced heavy rainfall across the area.

Rain continues to fall with another 1 to 2 inches possible. Lakeview, Russells Point and Waynesfield may experience flooding.

NEVER drive in areas where water covers the roadway. Do not allow children to play near storm drains or flooded creeks and streams, they can easily be pulled under or swept away by fast moving water.

Church To Host Kite Festival

CELINA — Area residents have the opportunity to kick back and relax on Sunday, participating in a classic outdoor activity at annual church festival.

St. John Lutheran Church, 1100 N. Main St., Celina, or the Purple Door Church, will host its fifth annual Kite Festival from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. The free festival entails kite-flying for all ages, a moonwalk and a meal. St. John Lutheran Church Director of Equipping Ministries Andrea Kuehne said the event was started to give area residents a relaxing, worry-free event when they needed it most.
