ST. MARYS — To wrap up Right to Read Week, students at St. Marys Intermediate School received a visit from a Columbus-area author.
Nancy Roe Pimm lives in Dublin now, but she grew up in New York City. She noted when she was young, she dreamed of becoming a cowgirl — something not realistic in New York City. When her sister got married, she lived on a horse farm and invited Roe Pimm to live with her in the summer.
ST. MARYS — Between homework, softball practices, dance recitals and Girl Scouts, Linda Opperman keeps busy with her granddaughters.
“I like being involved with the kids,” said Opperman, The Evening Leader’s 2012 Mother of the Year. “That’s helping me stay young for one thing. I just like helping out. I like seeing them grow up and helping them grow up to be good kids and keep them on the right track.”
She noted that she has been involved in several of her granddaughters’ activities.
ST. MARYS — A local law enforcement agency recently netted a state grant to help its drug awareness program.
The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office received $20,140.04 as part of a $3.8 million grant program administered by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine’s office. The funding is earmarked to keep school resource officers and DARE officers active in the local schools. The money will also expand the focus of the anti-drug campaign to include the dangers of prescription drugs, as well as drugs like marijuana, cocaine and heroin.
Bernard C. Kruse, 86, of St. Marys, died at 4:44 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2012, at the Golden Living Center in St. Marys.
He was born on Aug. 3, 1925, in Auglaize County, to John C. and Lula E. (Rohrbacher) Kruse, and they preceded him in death.
On Dec. 18, 1943, he married Ruth Wibbeler, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 9, 2007.
His is survived by a daughter, Linda Temple of St. Marys; three sons, Lynn (Mary Jane) Kruse of Coldwater, Andy (Kathy) Kruse of St. Marys and Don (Peggy) Kruse of St. Marys; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
LIMA — The St. Marys doubles pairing of Troy Newlove and Cole Brooks won a pair of matches on the first day at the Division II sectional at UNOH to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
Newlove and Brooks, the Riders’ top two singles players during the regular season, teamed up to play doubles for the postseason.
They defeated the Elida team of Greeley and Thompson in the second round, 7-5, 7-5.
Brooks and Newlove then defeated Lima Central Catholic’s Frankart and Kahle by a matching 7-5, 7-5 score.
FORT RECOVERY — The St. Marys boys baseball team clinched the most wins for a Roughrider baseball team in a season in 10 years with a 9-1 win at Fort Recovery on Thursday.
The Riders’ Nick Vogel went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and six runs batted in. He also started the game on the mound and earned the win.
Codie Deaton finished the game in relief.
D.J. Manning went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Adam Neal went 2-for-4 wiht a double and a run batted in, Michael Huber finished the game 2-for-4.
ST. MARYS — Senior Harle Smith of the St. Marys softball team sent the Riders out with a bang Thursday evening. Smith was 3 for 3 with a walk. She had two two-run doubles and a grand slam and she scored twice as the Riders defeated the Spencerville Bearcats 15-5 in five innings.
The Riders had three seniors on the team. Kiley Schamp, Harle Smith and Hannah Wurmer all contributed for the Riders this season.
Spencerville got the scoring underway with three runs in the first inning.
Fred R. Sipes, 68, of St. Marys, died at 7:19 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at his residence.
He was born on July 15, 1943, in Lima, to Ray Robert and Hilda Mabel (Virtue) Sipes, and they preceded him in death.
On Aug. 14, 1969, he married June E. Whitesell, and she survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Chris (Melissa) Sipes of Neptune and Ian Sipes of Neptune; a daughter, Gina (Jeremiah) Schaeffer of Dixon, Mo.; a brother; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister.
Dale L. Watercutter, 66, of 16 N. Cleveland St., Minster, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at his home of natural causes.
He was born on Jan. 19, 1946, in Minster, to Albert and Leona (Hartings) Watercutter, and they preceded him in death.
He is survived by a sister and brother; two sisters-in-law; nine nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
He was a veteran of the Army National Guard.
Billy O. “Bill” Eley, 85, of Haines City, Fla., formerly of Spencerville, died at 3:14 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Winterhaven Hospital in Florida, following a six-year kidney ailment.
He was born on July 26, 1926, in Lima, to Edgar C. and Naomi E. Hasting Eley, and they preceded him in death.
On June 28, 1952, he married Phyllis Ann Faurot, and she survives in Florida.
He is also survived by a daughter, Kayleen (Bev) Vance of Columbus; a granddaughter; a grandson; a great-grandson; two sisters; a sister-in-law.
