William R. “Bill” Yahl, 79,

May 14, 2012

William R. “Bill” Yahl, 79, of Botkins, died at 4:17 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.   

He was born on Sept. 17, 1932, in St. Marys, the son of Joseph and Martha (Greve) Yahl, and they preceded him in death.  

On Jan. 5, 1957, he married Mary K. Brown, and she survives.  

BASEBALL: Parkway spoils New Bremen's MAC title bid

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen’s hopes of winning the school’s first-ever Midwest Athletic Conference baseball title slipped away in the sixth inning of a 4-2 loss to Parkway on Saturday morning in a resumed game from May 4.

New Bremen needed to defeat Parkway in the conclusion of their May 4 game to clinch the school’s  first-ever  title.

The Cardinals and Panthers played five innings tied 1-1 when lightning suspended the game. Saturday they completed the game.

Marian C. Kentner, 97

May 14, 2012

Marian C. Kentner, 97, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:20 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2012, at Wapakoneta Manor.

She was born on April 5, 1915, in Moulton Township, the daughter of Grover and Henrietta (Rohrbacher) Lynch, and they preceded her in death.  

On March 5, 1938, she married Cletus V. Kentner, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1961.

Club Holds Annual Sale

ST. MARYS —  Shoppers looking for last-minute, colorful gifts for Mother’s Day had a place to visit as part of a local garden club’s annual flower sale.

The St. Marys Gardeners held its annual sale along Indiana Avenue Friday and Saturday. The event, which helps raise funds for the group, featured flowers of all shapes, sizes and colors.

Carp Derby To Return

ST. MARYS — A local lake will once again be filled with people seeking carp as part of a second-ever event.

The second-ever Get the Carp Outta Here fishing derby returns to Grand Lake St. Marys Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Last year, the event attracted close to 300 participants who helped remove 8,142 pounds of carp from the lake.

TENNIS: Rider doubles team headed to district tourney

LIMA — The St. Marys doubles team of Cole Brooks and Troy Newlove took third and advanced to the district level in the Division II sectional at UNOH  on Saturday.

Newlove and Brooks, who advanced into the semifinals with a pair of wins on Thursday, won the third-place match against Celina’s Isaac Elston and Kris LeJeune with a marathon tiebreaker win in the second set, 7-5, 7-5 (15-13).

Newlove and Brooks lost their semifinal round match against Derek Smith and Jason Barton of Shawnee, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
