SOFTBALL: New Bremen, Minster rally back for MAC victories

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen  Cardinals softball team recovered from a shaky start and had an eight-run fifth inning to come back and defeat the Marion Local Flyers 15-12 in a MAC contest Monday at New Bremen.

“We gave them a five spot in the first inning,” Cardinals head coach Craig Griesdorn. “But we responded with three in the bottom of the first. They came back with six but we came back from an 11-3 deficit and the reason why we did that was that we cleaned up our errors and we put the ball in play.”

BASEBALL: Rangers, Minster fall in non-conference games

NEW KNOXVILLE — Lima Temple Christian’s seven-run third inning broke things open and the Pioneers defeated New Knoxville 15-4 in six innings on Monday.

Temple Christian collected 14 hits and scored in five of its six at-bats.

Evan Sutton earned the win on the mound for the Pioneers.

New Knoxville’s Adam Porter took the loss on the mound.

Temple Christian improved to 3-10. The Rangers fell to 2-9.

New Knoxville travels to Fort Recovery on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. Midwest Athletic Conference game.

TENNIS: Riders sweep Piqua, 5-0

PIQUA — The St. Marys boys tennis team won at all five positions to sweep Piqua on Monday night.

St. Marys improved to 8-5 on the season. The Roughriders travel to Defiance today at 4:30 p.m.

St. Marys’ Troy Newlove defeated Austin Hemm at first singles, 6-1, 6-4.

The Roughriders’ Cole Brooks won second singles over Piqua’s Brandon Bercot, 6-4, 6-0.

The St. Marys first doubles team of Ryan Wenel and Noah Hartsock won 6-3, 6-7 (7-3), 6-3.

Wind Added To Portfolio

ST. MARYS —  The city of St. Marys will soon be getting a fraction of its energy from a renewable resources.

During their meeting Monday night, St. Marys City Councilors approved the first reading of an ordinance authorizing the execution of Blue Creek Wind Energy Scheduled with AMP to obtain energy from a wind farm in Paulding and Van Wert counties.

Safety-Service Director Jason Little said the deal would help save the city on its energy costs during the life of the 10-year pact.

New Knoxville Talks Gym

NEW KNOXVILLE — Talks of renovating the gymnasium at New Knoxville Local School are ongoing, and board members plan to seek community input in the coming months, New Knoxville Board of Education President Phil Kuck said Tuesday night at the board’s monthly meeting.

Kuck said board members heard a slew of options for the gymnasium from Garmann/Miller & Associates — the same company that handled the district’s renovation.

Mary Louise Stienecker, 77

Mary Louise Stienecker, 77, of 705 Oil St., St. Marys, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at St. Marys Living Center.

She was born on Oct. 6, 1934, in St. Marys, to Willard H. and Vivian C. (Fischer) Stienecker, and they preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret (Jerry) Baucher of Celina and Karen (Robert) Wisenborn of Celina; a sister-in-law, Norma Jean Stienecker of Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Willard Stienecker.

Lester Willis “Pinky” Seibert, 84

Lester Willis “Pinky” Seibert, 84, of rural Spencerville, died at 6:05 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima with his daughters at his bedside.

He was born on March 16, 1928, at his family farm in Salem Township, the son of John A. and Doris I. Mack Seibert, and they preceded him in death.

On Sept. 17, 1949, he married Rose Marie Prine, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 2005.

BASEBALL: Wins give Minster's Wiss 300 victories, Riders roll to doubleheader sweep

FT. LORAMIE —  Needing two wins in the Fort Loramie four-team tournament to give head coach Mike Wiss his 300th victory and a tourney title, in the first game the Minster baseball team coasted to a 13-2 five inning victory over the Covington Buccaneers and in the championship game jumped out to a big first inning lead and held on to defeat the hosting Redskins 10-6.

Official Stresses Boater Safety

ST. MARYS — Boaters taking to local waterways are encouraged to keep safety on their minds, a local watercraft officer says.

As warm weather sets in, State Watercraft Officer Kevin Peters said boaters should inspect their vessels before hitting the water. Boaters also should have several safety items handy before setting out.
