CELINA — The St. Marys baseball team saved its biggest hits for the last two innings as the Roughriders came back to defeat the Celina Bulldogs 5-3 in eight innings at Montgomery Field in Celina.
St. Marys (11-5, 5-1) will now travel to Sidney today for a doubleheader and entertain Defiance in a WBL contest on Tuesday, while Celina (8-8, 1-4) will entertain Paulding today.
Throughout the entire game the Riders threatened but couldn’t get that big hit for a run and it came down to their final at bat before they could come through to tie the game.
Celina’s five-run second inning broke things open in the Bulldogs’ 12-2 five-inning win over St. Marys.
Celina scored a run in the first and then five runs in the second.
The rout was on after Celina scored four more in the third. Leah Rose’s three-run home run that got just over the glove of the left fielder with two outs and two on pushed Celina’s lead to 10-0.
Back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the fourth made it 12-0.
The Celina boys tennis team won two of the three singles matches while splitting the doubles matches to edge St. Marys in a Western Buckeye League match on Friday evening.
Celina earned a three-set win from Aaron Seibel at second singles over the Riders’ Cole Brooks, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in the night’s most closely-contested match-up.
Celina’s Jeremy Walls won third singles over the Riders’ Jason Freewalt, 6-1, 6-0.
WAPAKONETA — Moving forward with improved security as part of courthouse renovations, the Auglaize County commissioners have purchased equipment necessary for those updates.
This week the commissioners approved the purchase of a scanner and magnatometer to place at the single entry point to the Auglaize County Courthouse once renovations are complete.
“It wasn’t part of our original bid package but it’s always been budgeted for the project,” Commissioner Doug Spencer said of the purchase.
ST. MARYS — After five years of meetings, planning, fundraising and construction, the Otterbein St. Marys Life Enrichment Center is now a reality.
ST. MARYS — Students in Jill Rothe’s kindergarten class have been learning about Earth Day and recently finished projects associated with Sunday’s holiday.
Rothe’s kindergarten students put together posters with the saying:
“Water, water in the air
Water, water everywhere.
Do not waste it
Keep it clean.
Water helps keep our earth green.”
Underneath the saying, the posters feature a handprint on planet Earth.
Annette V. Sanders, 91, of Celina, died on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at The Gardens at Celina.
She was born on June 27, 1920, in Osgood, to Leo J. and Mary Anges “Minnie” Henry Bruns, and they preceded her in death.
On June 27, 1939, she married Ted L. Sanders, and he preceded her in death on May 5, 1988.

NEW KNOXVILLE — Two New Knoxville Local School seniors were recently honored for their art pieces that were selected to be in the top 300 in the state.
ST. MARYS — The removal of two vacant homes and new playground equipment are being proposed as part of a grant program for next year.
The two structures — located at 502 Indiana Ave. and 215 S. Vine St. — are owned by the city. St. Marys Engineering Superintendent Craig Moeller said the project will be included in a grant application as part of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
