Derek Jay of St. Marys recently competed in the Ohio Knights of Columbus Regional Free Throw Contest held at Sidney Lehman High School on Sunday, Feb. 26.
Jay, a seventh grader, won the regional title for the fourth consecutive year to earn his trip to the state contest to be held Saturday, March 17 in Columbus.
Jay hit 23 of 25 free throws (92%) to earn the victory and will attempt to win a third state title in his fourth overall trip to state-level competition.
NEW BREMEN — Groups of New Bremen residents gathered on West Monroe Street Monday night, watching as firefighters fought a blaze that engulfed a historic downtown building.
Fire crews were dispatched to Fireside Pub, 115 W. Monroe St., where the pub shares the building with Que’s Barbershop at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday. No one was injured in the fire, as the pub closes at 2 p.m. Mondays.
Upon arriving on the scene, fire crews began working to extinguish the fire.
ST. MARYS — City councilors Monday night approved the hiring of the new safety-service director.
Dean Rhoades, 89, of Bradenton, Fla., died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012.
He was born on Nov. 1, 1922, to Glen and Glady (Keiber) Rhoades.
He is survived by his wife Shirley (Fryer); two sons Dale and Gary; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Dean had three brothers, Vernon, who is deceased, Charles, who survives in Greenwood, S.C., and his twin brother Gene, who survives in St. Marys.
He was preceded in death by a son, Doug.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Margaret Rider, 80, of St. Marys, died on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at her residence.
Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.
Kathryn “Kitty” B. Luecke, 92, of 120 S. West St., St. Marys, died at 7 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at Otterbein — St. Marys.
She was born on March 3, 1919, in St. Marys Township, Auglaize County, to Elmer and Mary (White) Youngs, and they preceded her in death.
On Oct. 18, 1956, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Marys, she married Rodney S. Luecke, and he survives.
Ron Brumbaugh, 62, of Brookville, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Good Samaritan Hospital.
He was born on Nov. 25, 1949, to Charles Russell and Naomi Mae (Uhrig) Brumbaugh.
He is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Denise Henderson of Brookville and Karen and Nick Ranly of Minster; two nieces; two nephews; two great-nieces.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Potsdam Church of the Brethren, 22 E. Cross St., Potsdam, with the Rev. Robert Kurtz officiating.
