MINSTER — Offensive rebounds and easy baskets meant everything in a low-possession, low-shooting percentage contest between Minster and St. Marys on Saturday night.
Minster got more of both.
The Wildcats downed St. Marys 50-42 with a steady infusion of second-chance points and backdoor lay-ups to go with some stingy defense.
“In a game that we knew was going to be tough and low possessions, a 4-0 or a 6-2 run was huge in this game and we had a couple of those in the third quarter,” Minster head coach Mike Lee said.
FORT LORAMIE — Lucas Leffel scored 25 points and Jake Allen added 18 points as New Knoxville burst past Fort Loramie with a big fourth quarter in a 52-43 win on Saturday night.
New Knoxville entered the fourth quarter trailing by one point before outscoring the Redskins 19-9 in the fourth quarter.
New Knoxville knocked down 21 free throws in the win.
The Rangers improved to 9-9 on the season. They will go to Versailles on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
CELINA – The New Bremen Cardinals basketball team showed just how aggressive they can be on offense and defense Saturday night against the Celina Bulldogs.
The Cardinals received 21 points apiece from Aaron Clune and Elliott Westerbeck to defeat the Bulldogs 69-60 at the Fieldhouse.
ANNA – A big start by the number one-ranked Anna Rockets propelled them to a 61-35 victory Saturday afternoon over the Minster Wildcats girls basketball team in a non-league game at Anna.
“We had two bad quarters today,” Minster head coach Nann Stechschulte said. “We had a bad start and a bad finish.”
“We got outscored 20-8 in the first quarter and 16-1 in the fourth quarter and that told the whole story,” Stechschulte said.
DEFIANCE — The St. Marys wrestling team finished eighth at the Western Buckeye League wrestling championships at Defiance High School on Saturday, while Wapakoneta added to its long line of league crowns with a runaway league title win.
The Roughriders scored 75 points.
St. Marys' Kaleb Chaney was the top finisher for the Roughriders, taking second place at 106 pounds.
Chaney fell to Wapakoneta's John Martin in the championship match via a pin at the 0:38 mark.
