Carman A. Hirschfeld, 95

February 10, 2012

Carman A. Hirschfeld, 95, of New Bremen, died at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at the Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Minster.

He was born on Feb. 17, 1916, on a farm near New Bremen, the son of Benjamin and Malinda (Kellermeyer) Hirschfeld, and they preceded him in death.

On Oct. 4, 1940, he married Norma Davenport, and she preceded him in death on May 30, 1998.

Lester L. Johnson, 76

Lester L. Johnson, 76, of 220 Lincoln Drive, Celina, died at 9:44 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

He was born on March 29, 1935, in Mercer County, to Albert W. and Mary Lavaun (Kendall) Johnson, and they preceded him in death.

On July 8, 1963, he married Jeanie Ousley, and she survives in Celina.

He is also survived by his daughter, Candy (Tom) Wale of Celina; a granddaughter.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War in Germany.

Flavorful Fundraiser

ST. MARYS — A local high school organization raised money by providing dinner for the public as part of a fourth-annual event.

During the Memorial High School National Honor Society’s Wing Ding, residents could snack on a catered meal by 2Willy’s barbecue of half a chicken, potato chips, applesauce and a roll with butter from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the school’s Commons area before the St. Marys-Ottawa Glandorf basketball game on Friday.

MINSTER —A series of free throws in the final two minutes allowed the New Knoxville Rangers to down Minster 43-41 in a match-up of two of the Midwest Athletic Conference's top teams.

“It’s a big win whenever you can come into Minster here and pull off a win, because they’ve got a very good team,” said New Knoxville head coach Tim Hegemier. “I think the girls worked real hard on defense.”

VERSAILLES — On a night where neither team really shot that well the Versailles Tigers took advantage of 23 New Bremen Cardinal turnovers to defeat the Cardinals 35-18 Thursday evening in a MAC contest played at Versailles.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: St. Marys can't hold lead at O-G

OTTAWA — The St. Marys girls basketball team put together strong bookend performances on Thursday night.  The middle portions of the game proved to be the Roughriders’ undoing.

Ottawa-Glandorf went on an 11-1 run early in the third quarter and held off a late St. Marys rally in a 40-35 win at the Robert J. Hermiller Gymnasium on Thursday night.

Kristen Miller scored a team-high 10 points for the Titans.

Ashleigh Falk scored a game-high 12 points for St. Marys and Reagan Aller added 10 points.

Cards Learn Importance Of Donations

NEW BREMEN — Area high school students learned about blood donation at an assembly Thursday afternoon in preparation for a blood drive that will be held later this month.

New Bremen sophomores, juniors and seniors gathered in the high school auditorium to learn about donating blood. Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative Jeri Garringer said she is a regular blood donor.

Bill Could Require Tests

ST. MARYS — A proposed bill in the Ohio House could mean motorists would have to brush up on current traffic laws before renewing an operator’s license.

House Bill 400, introduced by Youngstown Democrat Robert Hagan, would require anyone renewing an operator’s license to take and pass a written test required by those applying for a permit and take and pass the road exam every other renewal. The bill, which was introduced in December, has been assigned to the Transportation, Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee.
