January 30th
Robert L. Davis, 88, formerly of St. Marys, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at HealthPark Care Center in Fort Myers, Fla.
He was born on Dec. 18, 1923, in Union City, to Robert C. and Miriam B. (Jobes) Davis, and they preceded him in death.
He married Marjorie Weimer, and she preceded him in death in September 1960. On Dec. 8, 1961, he married Mary M. (Gibson) Casler, and she survives in Fort Myers, Fla., where they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Jan. 30: There will be a weigh in for the Grand Health Challenge from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. today at Wapak Medical Center.
Jan. 31: There will be a weigh in for the Grand Health Challenge from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at JTDMH's cardiac center and from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Mercer County Health Department.

CELINA - A Celina woman faces multiple charges stemming from a break-in at a local business.
In a news release, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said his office has filed charges against Mandi L. Gibbons, 31, of 632 Grove Street #9, Celina, with theft and breaking and entering, both fifth-degree felonies. She is being held in the Mercer County Detention Center

NEW BREMEN 48, MARION LOCAL 47
MARIA STEIN — Derek Bornhorst of New Bremen calmly sank two free throws with 6.5 seconds left in the game to defeat the Marion Local Flyers 48-47 Friday night in a MAC contest played at the Hanger in Marion Local.
Despite separate scoring droughts of five minutes and seven and a half minutes and a 10-for-21 performance at the free throw line in the second half, the Cardinals pulled out an important MAC win with the free throws that mattered most.
DEFIANCE 77, ST. MARYS 71
DEFIANCE — The St. Marys boys basketball team gave the Western Buckeye League’s top team all it could handle, but a 30-point night from Tory Guilliam helped Defiance get past a feisty Roughrider squad, 77-71.
The Roughriders got into a shootout with the unbeaten Bulldogs and stayed with them almost shot-for-shot, hitting 10 three-pointers.
CELINA — After receiving a grant, a local organization will be able to continue with additional moneys to help fund a watershed official.
During the Grand Lake Wabash/Watershed Alliance’s Joint Board meeting on Thursday, board members were notified they received the grant for Watershed Coordinator Laura Walker’s position.
“We were notified we got the watershed coordinator’s grant,” said Karen Balster with the Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation District.
ST. MARYS — A local hospice is in search of volunteers to help provide comfort, respite and support to area families and patients.
On Friday, Grand Lake Hospice, 1122 E. Spring St., St. Marys, held an open house for those interested in volunteering at the organization.
Volunteer Coordinator Julie Jacobs said volunteers are the lifeblood of any hospice.
“We’re just trying to get the word out about volunteering for hospice and the different ways you can volunteer at hospice,” Jacobs told The Evening Leader.
NEW BREMEN — Area residents can earn some extra cash this weekend and help a local organization by selling their old, unwanted jewelry.
The New Bremen American Legion Auxiliary will host a gold sale from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the New Bremen American Legion, located at 6458 State Route 66. Connie Voss of Voss Gold Buying will be on hand to test and weigh the gold. Organizer Dot Schwartz said sellers can bring any kind of gold — yellow, white or rose — or platinum jewelry for cash.
Virginia Fledderjohann Stoeckel, 88, of Kettering, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012.
She was born on March 20, 1923, in Linton, Ind., the daughter of the Rev. Adolph and Matilda (Meckstroth) Fledderjohann, and they preceded her in death.
On June 8, 1947, in New Knoxville, she married Bertram Stoeckel, and he preceded her in death.
